Description of Responsibilities:

The Assistant Professor of Public Relations will teach a variety of courses within the undergraduate Public Relations major and the graduate program in Strategic Communication. Courses may include survey of public relations, public relations research, public relations writing, design & layout for media, case studies in public relations, capstone in public relations, and other courses in the candidates specialty area. The Assistant Professor may also engage in online teaching in the newly developed public relations online completion program. The Assistant Professor will be expected to conduct scholarly research activity, perform undergraduate and graduate academic advisement, and participate in departmental and university service. The Assistant Professor may be asked to serve as the adviser for the SUNY Oswego Chapter of PRSSA. Finally, it is expected that the Assistant Professor engages in pedagogical and/or scholarly work to increase awareness of diversity and inclusion and understanding of difference.

The Assistant Professor of Public Relations will be expected to display a demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and scholarship, commitment to undergraduate and/or graduate education, and possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or terminal degree in Public Relations or related field /ABD considered – or master’s degree in Public Relations or related field with substantial professional public relations experience
  • Evidence of effectiveness at university-level teaching

  • Professional experience in public relations
  • Online teaching experience
  • Academic Advising experience
  • APR

Description of Department:   

Communication Studies is the largest department in the School of Communication, Media, and the Arts, serving approximately 800 majors and minors with close to 50 full and part-time faculty members. We are especially excited about the $80 million renovation of Hewitt Hall into the new home for the Departments of Communication Studies and Art and Design. This building, with a planned opening date in 2024, will feature state-of-the-art technology including brand-new television production studios, editing suites, a screening room, virtual reality labs, computer labs, research observation rooms, and a graduate-student suite featuring collaborative working spaces. Students will benefit from the most up-to-date technology, shared spaces, and interdisciplinary collaboration with Art and Design’s Graphic Arts program and Cinema and Screen Studies with whom we will share Hewitt Hall. Faculty will have access to new office and conference spaces, classrooms, and research spaces.

The department offers majors in public relations, broadcasting and mass communication, communication, and journalism and offers minors in communication and journalism as well as online degree completion programs in public relations and broadcasting and mass communication. Our graduate program offers an M.A. in strategic communication along with an option for a Certificate in integrated and social media. The master’s degree offers an online or residential modality. We are dedicated to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education and are committed to providing students with relevant interdisciplinary experiences. Finally, we strive to honor and recognize the diversity and backgrounds of our unique student population through our learning objectives, course offerings, alumni engagement, and departmental programming.
