Definition
Under general supervision, the Professional Expert provides assistance and support in accordance with assignments and directions from the supervisor. Professional Experts:

  • Have specialized knowledge or expertise not generally required of or found in the classifications established by the District.
  • Must be specially trained, experienced, or competent to perform expert services.
  • Are used on a temporary basis for a specific project or projects.
  • Terms of employment will be described in the Professional Expert Agreement
  • Non-academic, non-classified Professional Experts are not part of classified service. Non-academic, non-classified short-term employees are at-will employees and have no entitlement rights to any position in the District. Professional Expert employment shall not result in the displacement of Classified personnel.

    *Retired CalPERS Annuitants: may not exceed 960 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 through June 30)*

    Works directly with management in the development, implementation and execution of the NetLab Grant Infrastructure project. Will work as the point of contact or liaison for vendors, contractors, and outside agencies to ensure contractual obligations are met. Maintains and updates expectations and changes in project goals or timelines directly to supervisor.

    POSITION CHARACTERISTICS:
    This is a temporary, specially funded Professional Expert position to provide support for the Coastline College Career and Technical Education department focused on highly specialized and technical support for the NetLabs Infrastructure platform. The Professional Expert will serve as a subject matter expert specifically related to technical integrity and specifications for the NetLab Grant Infrastructure project.

    EXAMPLE OF DUTIES: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Provides specialized subject matter expert duties specifically related to for the highly specialized NetLabs environment project.
  • Works with specialized NetLabs hardware and software vendors including VARs to design, procure, upgrade and deploy new hardware and software in the evolution of NDG Netlab.
  • Coordinates with technical staff and faculty for the project design and implementation grant program classes hosted on the Coastline Regional NetLabs environment, including hardware and software specifications.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Qualifications and Physical Demands

    • Physically be able to lift 40 pounds and work with others to team lift up to 80 pounds.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Science or related technical discipline.
  • Experience using VMware ESXi and vCenter 6.7 and 7.x in a live environment with at least 4 hosts and 500 VMs.
  • Experience deploying Cisco routers; Cisco and Dell switches using VLT or VPC (Netgear switch experience preferred), VLANs, PVST+ and MST.
  • Experience with Avocent IP KVMs/consoles, IP PDUs. Experience with APC and Tripplite UPSes (including virtualization aware UPSes).
  • Experience with Dell-EMC and Synology storage systems. Experience with Dell R series servers and Dell chassis based systems (FX2 and MX a plus). Experience with Dell Openmanage Enterprise for Dell Product Firmware Upgrades, device monitoring and management with Dell iDRAC and Dell-EMC storage.
  • Experience using Dell (Force10 and Broadcom and Marvell based chipset) switches is preferred.
  • Licensed and Certifications:
    • Current or former certifications (or equivalent work experience): VMware VCP; Cisco CCNA (CCNP preferred)
    • Microsoft MCSA (MCSE preferred); Linux+ (Red Hat RHCSA preferred)
    • Security+ or Palo Alto PCNSA (Palo Alto PCNSE preferred).


    Conditions of Employment
    This is a professional expert position. The District reserves the right to extend, modify, or eliminate this position based upon available funds. The effective dates of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.

    This is a recruitment for an applicant POOL to fill temporary/short-term assignments on an as-needed basis.
