Job DutiesProvide Career Counseling to students both individually and in groups through workshops and presentations.? Teach Counseling 12 - Exploring College and Careers, a 1-unit course. Career Counsel students with selection of college major and potential careers. Administer and interpret nationally recognized career assessment tools, including the Myers Briggs Type Indicator and the Strong Interest Inventory. Teach students the job/internship preparation process including; how to write a resume, conduct an informational interview, job search strategies, navigate the world of work, networking, setting up a LinkedIn profile, how to get involved on campus, and utilize the internet for potential employment/internships.?Understand labor market information and trends. Implement the Guided Pathways model into career counseling to ensure the success of SMC students.?Work collaboratively with teaching faculty and administrators. Applicants should have familiarity with academic counseling and the relationship to career counseling in a higher education setting.? Participate in college, departmental, and faculty organization activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicant must meet the minimum qualifications of a Full-Time Faculty/Tenure Track Instructor-Career Counselor faculty discipline at the college. Your application should clearly show how you meet each of these qualifications:

Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent. (NOTE: A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline), pursuant to Title 5 Section 53410.1. Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the socio-economic, academic, cultural and ethnic diversity within the college student population including students with physical and/or learning disabilities as these factors relate to differences in learning styles.

Evidence of a working knowledge of equity practices in the classroom; the ability to effectively teach in a college classroom with a student population consisting of a diverse range of academic backgrounds, socio-economic status, cultural backgrounds, racial and ethnic identities, disabilities, gender identities and sexual orientations.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's in Career Counseling, or Counseling with a Career Certificate. A minimum of two-years career counseling experience in a California Community College is highly desirable. Must have 1-2 years of experience in administering and interpreting the Myers Briggs Type Indicator and the Strong Interest Inventory. Certification in the Myers Briggs Type Indicator and the Strong Interest Inventory preferred. Ability to conduct and interpret skills and values assessments. Experience teaching Career Planning courses at a community college or university. Evidence of sensitivity to, and understanding of the socio-economic, academic, cultural and ethnic diversity within the community college population including students with physical and/or learning disabilities as these factors relate to differences in learning styles, and career decision making.

Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and one-on-one, and a willingness to use culturally responsive practices.

Demonstrated sensitivity to issues of diversity, and ability to motivate and counsel/teach community college students of diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds, sexual orientations, genders, cultures, and learning styles, as well as students with disabilities or varied levels of academic preparation.

Pay Philosophy

Starting salaries for Full-Time Faculty are based on a combination of experience (step) and educational (group) achievement. Initial placement is within the starting salary range and a minimum of step 5 within the applicable group. Further advancements are based on longevity and educational growth.

FT Faculty Salary Schedule

This advertised salary range is based on the contracted regular semesters (Fall and Spring). Intersessions (Winter and/or Summer), additional teaching load, and/or substitute teaching may result in increased earning potential.
