Job Description:


Germanna Community College is a public, open access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. The College is a dynamic learning organization that serves as a Germanna regional leader and preferred partner where quality learning experiences enable students to participate effectively in the social, economic, political, intellectual, and cultural life of their communities. Germanna Community College is centrally located in Fredericksburg, VA between Washington D.C. and Richmond and between the Blue Ridge mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. Full of history, the area offers a community rich with diversity, the arts, technology, vineyards, hiking, canoeing/kayaking, and many other activities.

The Career Advisor plans and executes outreach and career/educational planning activities in an assigned area high school for the College. Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Student Development, this position identifies and participates in outreach and career planning activities for high school juniors, seniors, and parents. The Career Advisor serves as an ambassador for the College and cultivates strong relationships with prospective students, parents, high school personnel and area employers. Advises and counsels high school students - and other student populations, as needed, on post high school graduation goals, specifically exploring the benefits of community college enrollment through in person, via e-mail communication, and phone engagement. Coordinates on-campus tours and programs targeted towards prospective students and their parents/families. Coordinates the ongoing strategic communications to prospective students, as well as maintains a case management system to report outcomes to the VCCS and the College. Supports Dual Enrollment and Independent Dual Enrollment students to identify and participate in GCC educational opportunities. The Career Advisor also supports Madison County High School's Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs by helping students identify and participate in GCC educational opportunities, including Work-Based Learning (WBL) opportunities such as internships, externships, apprenticeships, and part-time employment.

Career Advisors offer a one-stop service that facilitates a student from application to enrollment in courses at Germanna. This position works closely with departments across the College and organizations within the community. This position also supports the College's Smart Start program as primary assignment. Smart Start is an incentive-based program funded by the College and the Germanna Community College Educational Foundation that encourages high school, homeschool, and new traditional college-aged students to enroll full-time for the summer, fall, and spring semesters. The Career Advisor will serve as the project leader within the Career Advisor team and support the Assistant Dean of Student Development in planning, implementing, and evaluating the Smart Start program.

Special Assignments:

KSA's/Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with school personnel, community representatives, and employers
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with students, parents/guardians, and families
  • Ability to maintain accurate and timely record-keeping and reporting



Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification:
  • Master’s degree in counseling, student development, education, or closely related area.
  • Experience in higher education setting, preferably community colleges
  • Extensive computer experience with familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets, and database software tools
  • Extensive customer service experience with an ability to respond and deescalate stressful situations
  • A valid driver’s license with the ability to travel throughout service area
  • Experience working with high school students and young adults


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience using Student Information System
  • Experience in admissions counseling and academic advising
  • Bilingual in Spanish
