Additional Qualifications and Skills

Ph.D. and direct supervisory experience of full-time staff preferred. Knowledge of undergraduate liberal arts programs and effective pedagogy preferred. Candidate must be self-motivating, able to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion regarding confidential or sensitive matters. Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously, and excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Communicates clearly both orally and in writing, has experience with public speaking, and has strong interpersonal skills. Able to build positive relationships and work professionally with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students. Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Additional Information

The Program in General Education is a set of courses and requirements outside the concentration (major) that all 6,500 undergraduates in Harvard College must fulfill. Courses in General Education address urgent problems or enduring questions, and are unusually explicit in connecting the subjects students study to the people they will become and the world beyond the classroom. In addition to the General Education requirement, the office supports the College’s divisional distribution and Quantitative Reasoning with Data requirements.

This position will be based in Cambridge, MA and requires at least 3 days in the office. Furthermore, individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process. This position will be based in Cambridge, MA. All remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA, CT, MA, MD, ME, NH, NY, RI, and VT).

Position Description

Reporting to the Director of the Program in General Education, the Associate Director provides program leadership and critical pedagogical and administrative support for the 90-100 General Education courses offered each year and the diverse range of faculty and teaching staff who teach these courses. Leading academic and administrative planning processes for Gen Ed courses, the Associate Director identifies, devises and assesses solutions for programmatic and pedagogical needs; develops and implements programs, services and resources for faculty and their teaching staff; and advises them collectively and individually as needed. The Associate Director assists the Director in formulating policies and procedures, and makes recommendations to the Director to improve overall course administration and support. The Associate Director works closely with other members of the senior leadership team to maintain and promote the quality of the program’s academic offerings; to contribute substantially to the strategic planning and design of the program; and to improve the ways in the which the office can support the students who take Gen Ed courses, as well as the faculty and teaching fellows/assistants who teach them. The Associate Director manages a team of two grade-55 Course Coordinators responsible for the day-to-day support for the courses.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Assisting the Director in administration of the Program in General Education, including strategic planning, departmental operations, and representing the department on various committees or working groups as the Director sees fit. Will also act on behalf of the Director as requested and serve as de-facto director when the Director is out of the office.
  2. Managing and overseeing all administrative and academic planning processes for Gen Ed courses in the Program, including Gen Ed enrollment processes and information, annual production of the online course catalog for 90-100 Gen Ed courses, the section allocation process, and the maintenance of departmental records and processes in a clear and orderly fashion.
  3. Managing all information and communications about the Program’s offerings, ensuring that they are complete and up-to-date: overseeing all communications to faculty and staff regarding course administration; serving as primary liaison to the Office of the FAS Registrar and the Office of Undergraduate Education Instructional Support team, and to other relevant departments and offices regarding the Program and its courses.
  4. Managing a team of two grade-55 Course Coordinators who perform all of the administrative responsibilities for the Program in General Education including all logistical support for courses (staffing, space, field trips, guest speakers, course materials, etc.).
  5. Creating trainings and resources for faculty and teaching staff (e.g. Head TF Orientation, templates, guides and manuals).
  6. Advising faculty and teaching staff about pedagogical and administrative aspects of their courses, troubleshooting problems, and connecting them to pedagogical and logistical resources as needed.
  7. Acting as the office’s first responder and representative for emergent and/or sensitive concerns, including employment or labor issues that involve the HGSU-UAW union; coordinating with local offices such as General Counsel and the Office of Labor and Employee Relations as necessary.
  8. Working interdepartmentally on large-scale, multi-user projects, such as the coordinated, ranked-choice Gen Ed enrollment lottery and joint Harvard College Curriculum resource creation.
  9. Compiling, analyzing, and providing data and other information as requested by the Standing Committee on General Education, Office of the President, the Dean of FAS and/or Harvard College, HPAC, Admissions, Development, and other stakeholders.
  10. Other duties as assigned by the Director.
