The Executive Director of Major Gifts plans and implements the major gift component of Skidmore’s fundraising initiatives. Leadership Gifts are defined as gifts of $50,000 or more, and may be directed to the Annual Fund, endowment, capital needs, or any College project. The Major Gifts program includes the identification of potential donors (alumni/ae, parents, families, and friends), the development and oversight of cultivation/solicitation strategies for the most capable and inclined gift prospects, the development of meaningful philanthropic relationships with these gift prospects, and the stewardship of these donors. The Executive Director manages the work of the Major Gifts Team and provides oversight for support staff. The are an effective manager and must have experience motivating a hybrid team of remote and on-campus staff comprised of individuals with varying levels of experience in varying locations.
  • Direct and oversee the management and recruitment of major gift officers to meet annual cash flow and new gifts and commitments goals via goals and metrics.
  • Provide one-on-one direction for each gift officer, serve as a mentor, and assist in managing their work load.
  • Plan and execute staff planning and strategy sessions. Implement assessment tools and reporting structure to monitor progress.
  • Develop long-term philanthropic relationships, which result in financial support for the College.
  • Identify prospects, determine ask amounts, strategize on approaches, conduct solicitations, and determine appropriate follow-up.
  • Set aggressive goals for cultivation and solicitation – and work to regularly assess progress toward those goals and strategies.
  • Meet gift and pledge expectations as determined annually.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Vice President, Development to manage specific fundraising projects or individual fundraising efforts when necessary, including fundraising efforts for capital projects, campaign priorities, etc.
  • Oversee leadership level ($10K+) Skidmore Fund solicitations by Major Gifts staff.
  • Manage leadership gift efforts with Reunion class prospects and work collaboratively with the Senior Director, Skidmore Fund and AVP Alumni Affairs and College Events to ensure reunion fundraising success.
Education : Bachelor's degree required

Experience : 8 to 10+ years of increasing, directly related or applicable experience.
  • Fundraising within a higher ed or non-profit setting. Management of a team working toward a significant fundraising goal and managing a team. Recruiting, developing, and motivating volunteers.
  • Proven expertise as a fundraiser. Management of teams and projects, volunteer leadership and management, comfort with marketing and publications initiatives, leadership skills, strong interpersonal and written communication skills, team-building skills, analytical skills.
  • Effective management of Major Gift team – ability to motivate a hybrid team of remote and on-campus staff comprised of individuals with varying levels of experience in varying locations.
  • Manage significant travel schedule while serving as a mentor and leader to their team.
  • Manage departmental budget.
  • Effective use of campus technology resources, management of assigned prospects and tracking systems.
  • Ability to productively utilize individual prospect, advancement staff, college-wide staff, and volunteer relationships.

Pay Range: Commensurate with experience
