Job Description

Animal colony organization, breeding and puppy care, maintenance, and experimentation

In vivo & in vitro experimentation, including serum and tissue collection and various cellular/molecular techniques

Genotyping by PCR.

Quantification of blood biomarkers.

Assistance in surgical procedures and anesthesia.

Organization and management of animal colony database, protocols, and records.

Communicate/coordinate with OAR, ACQA, ACUC, and researchers.

Write periodic reports.

Must be willing to work with both canine tissue and samples and to handle and work with live dogs.

Salary

Salary Range: $15.75 - $27.42 hourly

Grade: GGS - 007

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Graduation from a two-year accredited Veterinary Technician program or an equivalent or higher combination of education and experience.

Bachelor's degree in Veterinary or Animal Science or related field.

Prior experience working with research canines, puppy care, and animal breeding is desired but not required.

The current holder of a Missouri Veterinary technician license is desired but not required.

Prior experience in a research laboratory setting is desired. Proficiency with canine handling procedures is desired but not required.

Knowledge regarding canine general health, day-to-day animal care procedures, dog breeding and perinatal caring, puppy whelping, and sterilization are desired but not required.

Skills to monitor dog temperature, body weight, and other physiological signs (heart rate/rhythm, respiratory rate), grooming dogs, nail clipping, and manual puppy feeding are desired but not required.

Ability to assist with canine-related experiments, such as sterilized procedure setup, assistance with blood sampling, tissue sampling, and surgical procedure are desired but not required.

Able to learn genotyping by PCR.

Fluent in English and have excellent oral and written communication skills and computer skills. Able to write clear, concise reports, and use Excel and PowerPoint.

Able to work as a team member to solve problems, as well as independently.

Able to assist in training students, researchers, and laboratory staff in animal handling and sample collection.

Knowledge of anesthesia set-up, maintenance for surgical procedures, and drugs used for all aspects of anesthesia are desired but not required.

Good understanding of reading and interpreting electrocardiograms is desired but not required.

Ability to think clearly and logically during stressful situations requiring timely decision-making.
