Position Summary

As a part of Student Engagement and Wellness at Metropolitan State University of Denver, the Student Care Center & Dean of Students Office is committed to student safety and well-being by fostering a university community of integrity and respect. The scope of the office includes the facilitation of the coordination of case management on behalf of the CARE Team (behavioral intervention team and case management team), students in crisis (case management), oversight of the Roadrunner Food Pantry, management and execution of the Student Emergency Retention Fund, the Epic Scholars Program and public benefit assistance.

The Associate Director of the Student Care Center is an integral part of the Student Care Center team and autonomously manages several critical job responsibilities. This role oversees University-wide programmatic initiatives related to public benefits (i.e. SNAP, TANF, Medicaid) and basic needs in order to provide holistic and relevant support to low-income students in need. The Associate Director of the Student Care Center will lead strategic efforts with Single Stop, a comprehensive public benefits screener, and is responsible for its implementation across campus and integration with the Student Care Center.This administrator is a seasoned and creative social services or student affairs professional who is adept at both program development and direct student service. This role provides direct case management to students with complex needs referred through the CARE team.

The Associate Director of the Student Care Center provides support to the Director of the Student Care Center in the areas of Student Care Center leadership and other special projects. This position reports to the Director of the Student Care Center, and engages directly with other professional staff in the Student Care Center and Dean of Students Office to provide timely case management for a variety of complex student needs.The Associate Director is an equity-minded professional who develops and executes strategies that are intentionally designed to support equitable outcomes for students, with attention to the experiences and educational outcomes of BPIOC students, LGBTQ -identified students, and students with disabilities.This position is non-clinical but conducts assessment for immediate mental health and crisis intervention needs (i.e.: suicidality).

Duties/Responsibilities

30% – Manage Public Benefit Programs (Single Stop)
  • Oversee and implement new public benefits programs (i.e. Single Stop). Requires position to actively train and educate campus community on program as well as work with students who may qualify for public benefits.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of all public benefits programming and ongoing work to grow the initiative to successfully reach all students on campus.
  • Responsible for seeking and maintaining partnerships to build public benefits and to support students at Metropolitan State University of Denver.
  • Carries out special projects on behalf of the Student Care Center and/or the Dean of Students Office that are designed to enhance holistic case management support and basic needs initiatives. Identifies relevant opportunities for University service and support of students with complex needs. Makes recommendations for enhancements and/or modifications of existing services, processes, and policies that could benefit students receiving case management support.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with community and campus entities to foster relationships that may be of value to MSU Denver students and/or who refer students to the Dean of Students Office programs. Oversees related efforts conducted by the Cohort Program Coordinator/Case Manager.
  • Facilitates and monitors budget/donations related to the Public Benefits.
  • Responsible for grant and contracts related to basic needs and public benefits.
40% – Student Case Management, Crisis Triage, and Referrals Coordination for CARE Team
  • Manages and directs case management process, serve as one point of contact for faculty and staff to express concerns regarding students who exhibit symptoms associated with distress. Actively works to develop rapport across the institution with faculty, staff, and students to increase visibility of office programs designed to assist and intervene when students need support for complex issues. Autonomously triage students in distress as identified through CARE referral or who call or visit the Office, providing appropriate and timely interventions. Respond to critical incidents on campus as needed.
  • Make independent decisions, exercising sound professional judgment, in responding to student crises and/or in developing student case management plans. Coordinates case assignments with Director of the Student Care Center and other members of the Dean of Students Office. Implement non-clinical interventions to provide care, support and resources for students who have challenges with their health/wellness, academics, behavior, safety or their general welfare, or who otherwise may be at risk.
  • Liaise with health care providers on campus and in the community, law enforcement, parents, and colleagues across the institution to establish and ensure compliance with student action plans.
  • Assess for immediate mental health and crisis intervention needs (i.e.: suicidality).
  • Manage highly sensitive case information and assist with assigning cases to staff members to manage workflow and urgency as needed. Adhere to and execute CARE Team and student conduct protocols, including the maintenance of accurate electronic case management records. Conduct audits of case management records to ensure compliance with stated protocols. Maintains a system of follow up for students who are referred to campus or community resources, including providing services to encourage compliance with recommendations and care plans.
15% – Supervision
  • Supervise Student Care Center positions related to public benefits which may include cohort support for public benefits. Currently, this position provides supervision and leadership for two full-time staff:
    • SNAP Coordinator & Case Manager
    • HOPES Program Coordinator & Case Manager
  • This position may include supervision of graduate level intern(s) to support case management and public benefit initiatives.
10% – Outreach/Presentations and Trainings
  • Participate in communication/outreach efforts including presentations to faculty, staff, community members and students about the Student Care Center/Dean of Students Office.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community and campus entities to stay updated on services that may be of value to MSU Denver students and/or who refer students to the Student Care Center/Dean of Students Office programs.
  • Carry out special projects on behalf of the Student Care Center and/or the Dean of Students Office.
  • Develops, implements, and reports on assessment methods to evaluate program effectiveness. Assessing student learning and efficacy of the programs this position leads.
  • Remains current on higher education case management trends including compliance related issues, effectively working with a behavioral intervention team and basic needs initiatives.
  • Professional Development and Training: Designs programs, presentations, publications, and website to educate the campus community on Student Care Center and public benefits/basic needs related programs.
5% – Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications
  • Completed Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in social work, psychology, student affairs, or a related field
  • 2+ years of professional experience providing holistic case management support and resource navigation with students, individuals, and/or families
  • Experience assisting students, individuals, and/or families in applying for and maintaining public benefits ( SNAP, TANF, Medicaid, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience assessing and appropriately responding to crises including, but not limited to: threats of harm to self or others, domestic/interpersonal violence, etc.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Completed Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution, with a preference for completed coursework in social work, psychology, student affairs, or a related field
  • Professional work experience in higher education
  • One or more years of experience supervising full-time staff
  • Experience with grant applications, implementation, and meeting reporting requirements
  • Bilingual, Spanish preferred
  • Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to the needs of a diverse student population including non-traditional students, students of color, and first-generation college students
