- Experience teaching or the potential to teach Contemporary Musicianship and music theory courses that engage with popular music.
- A record of research activity within music theory.
- Commitment to undergraduate education and current pedagogical practices.
- Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in teaching, research, and/or service.
- Doctorate in music theory or composition completed by August 21, 2023.

Description of the Department or Unit
HAYES SCHOOL OF MUSIC : The Hayes School of Music consists of 400 music students and 54 full-time faculty and offers undergraduate degrees in music education, music therapy, music industry studies and music performance with concentrations in instrumental or vocal performance, music theory/composition and sacred music. Graduate degrees are offered in music therapy and music performance with concentrations in instrumental or vocal performance, music theory/composition and conducting.
The Hayes School of Music prepares young musicians for professional lives as performers, composers, music educators, music therapists, conductors, scholars, and music industry professionals, ensuring the next generation of musical leadership for the state, region, and nation.

The Erneston Music Library, located in the Broyhill Music Center, supports the curriculum of the Mariam Cannon Hayes School of Music and the University, and contains books, scores, and recordings. In addition, the Special Collections Research Center in Belk Library contains a growing collection of rare book and manuscript materials relating to classical music. Highlights of the collection include the scores of conductor Hans Schwieger, the original manuscripts of composer Tui St. George Tucker, and the Matanya Ophee Collection, one of the largest collections of 19th-century guitar music in the world.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This faculty member will teach music theory/aural skills courses within the undergraduate core, including Contemporary Musicianship courses that address core skills within the context of popular music. Additional teaching assignments may include upper-level/graduate analysis, music theory pedagogy, and other courses related to the candidate’s interests and background.
The successful candidate will be expected to pursue an active research agenda and work with theory colleagues to refine an innovative curriculum that supports the diverse professional degrees in the Hayes School of Music.
Other responsibilities include mentoring student research, student advisement, and service activities. The successful candidate must also actively exemplify diversity and inclusion in teaching, curriculum, and service.
In the Hayes School of Music, full-time tenure-eligible or tenured faculty members are expected to teach 24 full-time equivalent hours (FTEs) per academic year. A faculty member may request up to 6 FTEs annually for extensive research or creative activity.
