Position Summary

To assist the Senior Director of Operations in the development and implementation of campus-wide sustainability policies, initiatives, procedures, practices and educational opportunities related to the College’s continued effort towards sustainability.

Description of Key Responsibilities

1. Develop measurement, plans, policies and procedures for sustainability of the campus, including the following:
2. Maintain and monitor a sustainability audit/inventory to measure baseline levels of campus energy, and water use. Develop and implement policies, protocols and programs which reduce use of those and other resources.
3. Develop and maintain a campus-wide sustainability plan including strategies, policies, and programs which will assist in the plan’s implementation. Measure and report to the campus community, progress made in the implementation of the plan. Solicit support and cooperation across campus groups to accomplish sustainability goals. Present regularly to groups on sustainability issues and the campus-wide plan.
4. Coordinate and support the sustainability working committee. Develop a reporting structure that coordinates campus sustainability plans; involve students, faculty, staff and the community.
5. Coordinate and monitor the College’s tree inventory to help maintain or improve upon the current arboretum status.
6. Lead and/or participate in efforts to develop alternative energy programs on campus. This may include:
7. Investigate and implement programs and processes that conserve resources of all types. Pursue low-cost, high-return energy efficient upgrades that conserve energy, while making suggestions for cost-effective renewable energy purchases.
8. Investigate wind, solar, geothermal and other alternative sources of energy for use on campus. Make recommendations about alternative and renewable energy sources and methods. Implement plans for alternative energy use.
9. Encourage the use of environmentally friendly landscaping practices including native plant landscaping, composting and organic fertilizers, and sustainable landscaping materials.
10. Develop sustainability efforts that prioritize the purchase of reusable material, green-certified materials, eco-friendly products and supplies, bulk items and products requiring minimal packaging.
11. Assist in LEED certification (if applicable) processes and contribute recommendations for retrofitting existing buildings in order to promote energy conservation and to reduce Green House Gas emissions.
12. Investigate and encourage the use of technologies that contribute to campus sustainability goals.
13. Recommend new technologies and products that reduce resource consumption, promote sustainability, and limit exposure to harmful chemicals.
14. Coordinate recycling efforts, make recommendations on recycling improvements and educate students, faculty, and staff on recycling. Develop campus wide strategies that promote recycling and reusing.
15. Develop a program to encourage students and community members to reuse items.
16. Coordinate the Colleges on-going recycling and composting programs, along with the College’s food and cleaning service providers.
17. Develop and promote alternative transportation options (public transit, bicycling, carpooling, etc.) for students, faculty and staff.
18. Make recommendations on parking initiatives that will reduce the need for faculty, staff and student driving.
19. Develop programs to influence employee choices on energy use, transportation, gardening, composting, recycling, and other sustainability issues. Create incentives which encourage employees to make choices and take actions aligned with sustainability goals.
20. Develop community partnerships that will further the College’s sustainability effort. Participate and present to community groups on sustainability.
21. Participate in new student and new staff orientation, presenting the College’s sustainability plan and programs.
22. Develop student programs, engaging individual residential students, commuter student organizations, Student Governing Association and Residence Hall Association. Involve student representatives in the measurement, planning and implementation of campus-wide sustainability goals.
23. Foster student learning opportunities related to campus sustainability efforts.
24. Collaborate with faculty involved in environmental studies and support academic endeavors designed to encourage the study of sustainability issues.
25. Advise the College’s sustainability/environmental student group(s). Involve student organizations in the overall campus sustainability plan. Measure the student group progress toward campus sustainability goals.
26. Support the College’s mission, vision and values, and contribute to the advancement of
the College’s Strategic Plan.
27. Demonstrate a strong commitment to continuous quality improvement.
28. Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students and visitors to the College. Promote a flexible, collaborative and inclusive work and living environment and engage in educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Ability to perform a variety of complex analytical tasks, including the use of financial and operational data, and analysis of resource consumption and facility operations, developing options, making recommendations and compiling and presenting in a readable format.
2. Ability to obtain and maintain expertise and understanding in federal, state, local laws and regulations pertaining to sustainability programs.
3. Ability to develop clear and concise written policy information summarizing technical issues. Ability to prepare and deliver effective presentations to varied audiences, communicate technical information and facilitate meetings.
4. Ability to deal with several tasks and work with a large number of individuals concurrently, generally with direct supervision. This requires a person who is well organized, detail oriented, flexible and able to effectively prioritize tasks.
5. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
6. Ability to work independently and as an effective member of a team.
7. Ability to establish interest and creativity in implementing campus-wide programs.
8. Ability to quickly grasp knowledge of College organization and operation, including community resources.
9. Ability to relate well to, serve as a role model for, and advise a wide variety of students.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The individual in this position is responsible for creatively developing new approaches to campus-wide sustainability efforts, including but not limited to, policy development; program implementation; monitor energy consumption and energy conservation efforts; promote alternative energy utilization; purchasing of sustainable products; implement alternative transportation measures; campus-wide recycling; and sustainability programming.
The Sustainability Coordinator is a person with a passion for sustainability and the capabilities to discover and implement ideas and programs.

Education/Training

A Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Environmental Studies, Sustainability, Public Health or related field is required. Completion of the OSHA 30 Hour General Industry Course and asbestos awareness training is required within 90 days of hire.

Experience

A minimum of (1) one year of experience in management, sustainability-related education or related environmental field experience is required. Previous supervisory experience strongly preferred. Prior experience in higher education preferred.

Licenses or Certifications

A valid Illinois driver’s license is required.
