Job Description

A key leader on the Digital team, Division of Marketing, the UX Developer directs user experience & design direction for the central suite of products that form the digital presence of Syracuse University. The UX Developer will collaborate with the Digital, Creative and Strategy teams to understand the University’s brand guidelines and is responsible for leveraging, expanding and managing our digital design system to support new features and functionality. This position will lead, deliver and develop responsive UI/UX wireframes, mockups and prototypes for central products such as the Syracuse.edu flagship website, campaign landing pages, forms, etc. and will collaborate with other units across campus to advise and offer recommendations in the areas of user interface and user experience design. UX Developer directs data-driven decisions, including conducting user testing, research & reviewing website analytics. Receives & processes all feedback, user research, and feature requests leveraging expertise in the areas of digital design, UX best practices, progressive enhancement, and web accessibility, and collaborates with specialists in the areas of enterprise hosting, information security, technical SEO, back-end development, and web analytics to refine and grow the design system and central web products.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent amount of education or experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of work experience in interactive and/or user experience design.
  • Minimum 3 years prototyping and developing user interface layouts.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working with enterprise CMSs, HTML, CSS, jQuery, SASS, Git/Github, technical SEO, WCAG 2.0/2.1.
Job Specific Qualifications
  • Demonstrated proficiency in HTML, CSS, and front-end strategies, such as progressive enhancement and modular design and development.
  • Deep understanding of web standards, including WCAG for web accessibility, and a demonstrated commitment to inclusive design.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience designing agnostic to device or screen-size.
  • Experience conducting design research and interpreting qualitative data, fluency in web usability and user-testing methods.
  • Experience writing, conducting, analyzing and reporting on user testing and other research modes.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to document design best-practices and digital brand standards, and to offer constructive critique with proposed recommendations for changes, when necessary.
  • Must provide a portfolio of material that demonstrates experience designing responsive interfaces.
  • Proficient in Adobe XD, Photoshop, Illustrator and other Creative Suite products.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the conceptualization, planning, and development of digital user interfaces consistent with Syracuse University’s brand guidelines, using data and research findings, and leveraging existing design language, design system components and best practices when appropriate.
  • Vet all user feedback, user research, and feature requests for centrally managed products, refining the design system and extending its patterns or introducing new ones as appropriate. Organize and prioritize back-end development work, and direct front-end and back-end web development ensuring consistent commitment to a universally accessible, device agnostic, user-centric user experience. Extend Home site templates and functionality into complementary web products such as the News product, Events product, Research product, and additionally templates available for distribution to the schools, colleges, and major units across campus.
  • Consult and collaborate with various stakeholders to bring projects from conceptual stages to production. Assists with organizing & direct back-end web development.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Marketing and campus partners and advise on new technologies, user experience standards, and resources.
