Job Description Summary

This position is responsible for the function, oversight and management of all facets of the Prince George’s Municipal Police Academy, including the Police Academy classes, other law enforcement certification programs, and security training. The director will ensure compliance with the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions ( MPCTC ), as well as all other governing, certifying and accrediting bodies.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Must have served as a police officer for a minimum of 10 years
  • Bachelor’s degree required in a related field.
  • Must have supervised personnel a minimum of two years.
  • Experienced in various law enforcement fields/subjects is preferred

Criteria

CRITERIA : The following criteria, which are not the sole criteria used in the final hiring decision, will be used to review the applications of those persons who meet the stated minimum qualifications and to select those qualified applicants who will be interviewed. ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Manage and supervise, delegate tasks, coach, counsel and evaluate the work of the program’s students, instructors, professional and support staff
  • Recruit, interview, recommend for hire, orient, train, and evaluate adjunct faculty, consultants and support staff
  • Ensure that all faculty and staff are fully compliant with the requirements of PGCC
  • Ensure that faculty meet the requirements of the MPCTC
  • Supervise Academy instructors to ensure that content and quality of instruction meet required standards
  • With the Academy Compliance Coordinator, establish procedures to evaluate all training programs and procedures for testing, as well as storing student files, data and other documentation
  • Conduct periodic internal audits of Academy records and student files to ensure successful completion of the MPCTC biennial audit.
  • Plan, prepare and conduct professional development activities, including classroom observations and feedback, workshops, internal and external training, and dissemination of information and materials
  • Review and select instructional materials; design and oversee the writing of curricula and materials
  • Establish and consult with an Advisory Board, composed of members of the law enforcement and related professional related communities.
  • Establish procedures to monitor and evaluate programs, and modify or eliminate as needed
  • Monitor the department’s program data; conducting periodic internal audits as needed
  • Create, develop and evaluate the curricula for all programs and courses offered by the Academy; this includes obtaining MPCTC certification for all programs
  • Create and manage the scheduling for all elements of the Academy
  • Develop and foster relationships with the MPCTC personnel, as well as other agencies in the region
  • Communicate regularly with the Department Dean, Chair and other Public Safety and Law faculty and staff members
  • Write and develop the annual budget, which supports the successful operation of the Academy
  • Promote and market the training programs/opportunities, offered to law enforcement officers
  • Promote and support the mission and goals of PGCC
  • Network with other team members, other campus offices, other community colleges and the general community to accomplish work objectives
  • Actively participate in professional development and in appropriate committees, task forces, professional associations and organizations at the campus, state, regional and national levels
  • Field internal and external inquiries related to all elements of the program
  • Instruct, as needed in the Academy
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public, through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. No significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions, however on occasion, position requires lifting/moving/transporting cases of ammunition / 10 lbs.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Current certification as an instructor by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions, or the ability to obtain certification within six months.
  • Certification as an Academy Director by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions, or ability to obtain certification when next offered by the Commissions.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English.
  • As required by the 1986 Immigration Act, be prepared to present acceptable documentation showing your identity and that you are a U.S. citizen or an alien who is authorized to work.
  • A background investigation will be conducted prior to the offer of employment. A signed authorization for the release of personal information will be required if selected for an interview.
