Position Summary
The major responsibilities for this position are to conduct research associated with the development and validation of proprietary microbes that increase the production of synthesized materials and to develop and valid methods of culturing the microbes for maximum production of the synthesized materials in as short a growth cycle as possible. In addition to managing a microbial fermentation research team, the chosen Assistant Research Scientist will also work with a multi-disciplined team of faculty, staff and students within the New Materials Institute to succeed in research objectives defined by the grant sponsor.
The successful candidate will join the New Materials Institute currently consisting of five full-time faculty members (tenured and non-tenured), 8 staff and approximately 6 graduate and undergraduate students.

Minimum Qualifications
PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology or equivalent degree.
Additional Requirements
At least 3 years of post-graduate experience involving research and development of fermentation techniques in bench scale as well as at least 1500 liter pilot scale fermenters.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
Demonstrated expertise in working with multi-disciplined teams of microbiologist and engineers in the development and validation of methods to improve the quantity and quality of microbially synthesized biopolymers is preferred.
