Description of Job Duties and Responsibilities
Fairmont State University seeks candidates for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in our small, student-centered, and collaborative ACS -approved Chemistry program. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in chemistry or closely related field prior to the start date of the position. The successful applicant will have the primary responsibility of teaching foundational biochemistry and advanced biochemistry courses. We anticipate additional teaching responsibilities for this position to include, but not limited to, introductory chemistry lectures and labs for both majors and non-majors. Chemistry faculty teach 15 contact hours per semester (including laboratories). Faculty also mentor students in undergraduate research projects and clubs, serve on university and college committees, rotationally serve as chemistry program coordinator, help maintain instrumentation and shared laboratory space, conduct program and course assessment, and participate in department and program activities. Scholarship is expected and can take many forms. Preference will be giving to candidates with undergraduate teaching experience. We encourage applications from underrepresented groups. A demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for disadvantaged students through teaching or mentoring activities is desired.
We actively collaborate with the other Natural Science programs and share instrumentation. Ability to contribute to ongoing student driven research projects (e.g., chemistry, environmental, forensic science, and/or biochemistry, etc. projects) is encouraged. Fairmont State has a strong focus on student success and is one of five collaborating institutions on a major NSF INCLUDES Alliance award in support of rural, first-generation students. Additionally, Fairmont State was recently awarded an NSF S- STEM grant to improve the educational experience of academically talented low-income students in STEM fields.
