The Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is searching for a seasoned design practitioner and leader to join the faculty as a design teaching track professor. This position involves teaching existing courses in design, research and innovation to graduate and undergraduate students from the HCII, the School of Computer Science, the Tepper School of Business and other programs at CMU. In this position the veteran practitioner and teaching faculty member will engage partners in industry, government and other organizations to explore engagements in educational projects, sponsored research, recruiting, in-class participation and high profile events aimed at changing human-computer interaction practice. HCII teaching professors are expected to bring knowledge of industry needs and trends to their participation in committees for program reviews, curriculum development, program admissions, hiring, and placement among others.

The HCI Institute produces exceptional undergraduate and master students who improve the state of the world through a systematic, disciplined and principled approach to using technology to innovate and improve the human condition. The HCII teaches students preparing to become UX designers, service designers, UX researchers, HCI practitioners, user experience engineers, front-end developers, learning science innovators, human-centered data scientists, product managers, and other technology leadership positions.

Qualifications

user experience design, user interface design, conceptual design, concept validation, prototyping, usability testing, applications of artificial intelligence to UX, digital storytelling, product design, service design, design facilitation. Qualified applicants will demonstrate their industry leadership with the design of several major innovative projects, systems or applications that also evidence development of new methods. Qualified applicants will demonstrate their application of scholarly research into professional practice and show a long history of mentoring responsibilities in several different business contexts including consulting, product companies, start-up and a variety of industry verticals. Contributing to the professional practice of through professional organizations such as IxDA, Interaction Design Foundation, Service Design Network, SXSW, UXPA and others.

Candidates should have experience building and growing human-computer interaction departments and attracting other highly qualified practitioners. Qualified candidates will be recognized as thought leaders through awards, nominations, publication of professional journals and/or peer-reviewed scholarly research and conference participation. Written or oral presentations to advance organizational transformation and educate executive leadership are desirable.

All applicants will be required to submit a portfolio. Selected applicants will be required to present a project from their portfolio and give a teaching demonstration to HCI students and faculty.

A Bachelor’s Degree in design or a related field is required for this position. We will consider candidates at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Teaching Professor levels.

HCII teaching faculty typically carry a load of 8 classes annually that may be offset with service on committees and other HCII initiatives. The effective date of appointment is Spring 2023. Salary is dependent on education, industry experience, teaching experience, and other relevant qualifications.
