Position Function
Reporting to the Director of Student Financial Services, the Financial Wellness Advisor will provide financial wellness information to students and their families to support their goal of budgeting and paying for college. The services the Financial Wellness Advisor provide include one-on-one financial counseling sessions with BSU targeted student population and their families, presentations; and workshops to educate students and parents on issues relating to personal finance. Adherence to inclusive excellence training for diversity and equal opportunity for all students. The Financial Wellness analyst is responsible for analyzing and pulling reports to identify target population while generating lists of students in financial risk, in addition to coaching students on developing plans of actions to fund their education and to achieve and maintain financial stability.
Minimum Education
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in business administration, education, accounting, finance or related area.
Minimum Experience
At least one year of financial experience in a financial institution or university setting with project management experience.
Minimum Other
Microsoft Office experience; effective written and verbal communication skills; negotiating, counseling and problem solving skills. Strong organizational and customer service skills.
Ability and willingness to travel to meet in need and targeted students within the community mostly on campus or within the surrounding counties.
Ability to participate in speaking engagements at local and public schools.
Ability and willingness to work some evenings and weekends, as needed.
Must have valid driver’s license and be eligible for insurability under the university’s auto fleet policy.
Authorization to work in the US
Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.
Preferred Education
Preferred Experience
Previous experience in the financial wellness field or credit counseling or education.
Experience in a university setting; additional years of experience in accounting, banking, cashiering, or related experience.
Experience working with target population of first generation students; also familiarity with low- and moderate – income students and their families.
Demonstrated knowledge of effective financial counseling and coaching methods.
Demonstrated ability to facilitate financial workshops and training.
Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work within a culturally diverse fast-paced environment.
Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Work, Excel, PowerPoint, Access). Ellucian (Banner) ERP system experience, CASHNet, Argos and other report writing skills preferred.
Preferred Other
Willingness to obtain certification and continuing education in the financial wellness field.

Job Duty
Develop and present financial wellness presentations to BSU stakeholders on topics regarding financial planning and budgeting for higher education. Develop and implements campus outreach events to promote/provide financial wellness services to students at BSU and create and maintain a professional, welcoming atmosphere for students accessing SFS financial wellness resources for services and information.

Develop and continually refresh the financial wellness website with new content, create or acquire resources in all media types for distribution to students and families. Work with external partners to provide financial wellness learning opportunities in the form of workshops, webcasts, webinars, etc. Work with all other campus partners that are providing financial wellness programs to select populations in order to work as a team or to provide complimentary services.

Connect with Cardinal Central, BSU’s one stop shop to reference and follow up on services linked to financial wellness, also work as a liaison to Cardinal Central to streamline all financial wellness needs. Provide one-on-one counseling sessions, working with students to help them understand essentials of personal finance, establish a basic level of financial wellness, and apply money management techniques to manage their finances.

Encourage students to adopt and practice good financial habits, working with them to develop household budgets and strategies to help them live within their means and achieve financial stability. Support students in resolving current sensitive financial situations, providing information from campus/community resources and gov’t agencies to address their immediate needs (i.e. OFAS, housing, Student Affairs, food banks, etc.).

Work with students in completing detailed financial assessments, reviewing their credit reports and FICO credit scores, and educate them on understanding credit, finance charges and interest rates. Support students in developing strategies to reduce and avoid debt, and to protect their credit.

Provide referrals to BSU departments for additional assistance such as Advising, Student Success, Career Services, Wellness Center, Cardinal Central, Financial Aid, Veterans Affairs, etc.
