Assistant Vice President, Student Financial Aid

The AVP, Student Financial Aid, is responsible for oversight of the student financial aid teams and the accurate and timely disbursement of federal and state student financial aid programs, ensuring continued improvement of the various teams by providing vision, leadership, and supervision for staff and advancement of processes. The role leads strategic planning, formulates and implements departmental policies, ensures development of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal student aid regulations, and serves as the point of contact for company-wide initiatives.

The role serves in several capacities including operations management, systems management, data analysis, and relationship building with all levels of the company. The AVP, Student Financial Aid, must be confident with making independent and professional decisions by staying abreast on federal student aid regulations and industry trends.

Responsibilities:
  • Leads, plans, and organizes department operations of the Student Financial Aid Team, including oversight of the organizational structure, goal setting, and training and development of staff.
  • Responsible for oversight and management of accurate and timely processing of student aid programs as measured by internal and external audits.
  • Manages the external financial aid audit and works with external auditors, financial aid compliance, and corporate accounting to ensure accuracy, timeliness and completeness.
  • Ensures team adheres to excellent customer service standards and ensures teams are meeting daily, weekly and monthly metrics and goals, as measured by student surveys and student satisfaction metrics.
  • Identify areas of improvement needed in both systems and processes that will lead to increase in accuracy and efficiency of the delivery of student financial aid programs.
  • Ensures department personnel issues are professionally addressed and staff receives comprehensive and consistent performance evaluations.
  • Works with Internal Audit and corporate accounting team to ensure SOX narratives are up to date and controls are reviewed, tested and followed.
  • Implements and upholds federal student aid policies set forth by both the institution and Department of Education.
  • Stays abreast of regulatory changes that affects the student financial aid team and students, and informs and advises executive leadership on changes and impacts.
  • Works with IT and support teams to resolve failures in system processing, implement enhancements, report issues, and lead User Acceptance Testing (UAT).
  • Annually develops and manages a financial aid budget inclusive of labor and operational line items.
  • Involves self in industry to maintain professional knowledge and visibility in relevant organizations (e.g., NASFAA).
  • Interacts with company staff and various teams, at all levels as required, to meet strategic objectives.
  • Works with internal and external auditors as needed.
  • Completes special projects as assigned.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution required.
  • Minimum of 5 years intermediate management and leadership experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in financial aid leadership in a higher education setting.
  • Candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to interact with students and staff in a positive and professional manner.
  • Knowledge of financial aid regulations.
  • Ability to understand and implement policies and procedures.
  • Understanding of higher education learning structure and purpose.
  • Excellent networking and relationship building skills.
  • Strong understanding of business and management principles.
  • Sound decision-making and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure, within deadlines, and independently.
