General Responsibilities The Director of Mental Health Counseling is responsible for providing student-centered leadership in the administration, planning, implementation, and evaluation of mental health counseling services. These services are provided to promote students' personal development and psychological well-being and include individual and group counseling, outreach programming, training, faculty and staff consultation, crisis intervention, and assessment. This position involves supervising and evaluating professional and support staff, budget administration, and formulation of unit policies and procedures. The position will actively partner with the student success division and across the college and demonstrate their dedication to equitable outcomes for students and staff.

Work Performed
  • Provides interaction and communication with other college departments by coordinating the services of the Mental Health Counseling Center.
  • Ensures the department's financial responsibility by preparing, monitoring, and supervising budget expenditures.
  • Provides effective and appropriate services by planning, organizing, and implementing new counseling, training, and educational outreach programs.
  • Ensures that the needs of students are addressed in emergency situations by coordinating and/or providing crisis intervention services during office hours and after hours as needed.
  • Provides input to other units of the college by serving on college committees.
  • Provides information and support by planning in-service and professional training experiences for Mental Health Counseling staff.
  • Provides monitoring of clinical records to ensure compliance with state and federal requirements for clinical records.
  • Communicate the mental health counseling center's function and mission by meeting with students, faculty, and administrative groups of the college and the greater community.
  • Provides for continuity of care by recruiting, selecting, training, and supervising Mental Health Counseling Center personnel.
  • Provides clinical supervision for non-credentialed staff operating under the supervisor's license.
  • Actively participates in and contributes to staff planning and evaluation of services and staff performance.
  • Compiles statistics for Vital Signs, program reviews, annual reports, and other reporting requirements.
  • Facilitates a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
  • Completes the staff performance evaluations.
  • Leads the case consultation team and serves on the ASSIST (behavioral intervention) team.
  • Participates in applicable professional counseling associations.
  • Assists with writing grants to secure funding for the area.
  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development seminars, and attending training and/or courses as required by the Associate Vice President of Student Development and the Vice President of Student Success and obtaining Continuing Education Units (CEUs) as required by state licensing and regulatory boards.
  • Contributes to the overall success of the Mental Health Counseling Center by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Vice President for Student Success.




Minimum Education Required Doctorate

Minimum Number of Years Experience Required 3

Other Knowledge Required
  • A Doctorate in psychology, counseling or a mental health discipline is required.
  • Five years of clinical/counseling experience in a college counseling center or related mental health agency is required.
  • Must be professionally licensed in the state of Maryland or license eligible.
  • Crisis Intervention experience is required.
  • Management/supervisory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of student development theory and best practices in providing comprehensive mental health counseling to college students.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work with outside agencies and faculty, and skill at facilitating/conducting small and large group presentations.
  • Experience working with budgets preferred.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.




OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Occasional weekend and evening hours programs are required. as needed and for special events.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Regular attendance is a requirement of this job.
  • Performs all duties while considering the impact of any actions on the college's sustainability initiatives in the areas of environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic prosperity.

SUPERVISION
  • The Director of Mental Health Counseling is supervised by the Associate Vice President of Student Development and supervises the staff of the Mental Health Counseling Center, which includes clinical supervision of mental health clinicians, licensed professional counselors and social workers, part-time counselors, and graduate externs. Provides general supervision for support staff and student workers.
