The Laboratory of Biochemical Neurobiology, part of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, is seeking a Research Specialist to focus on investigating pathogenic pathways and finding novel therapeutic targets for neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia and related disorders.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform complex protein purification assays from cells and human brain tissue.
  • Obtain and analyze protein aggregates in cells and human brain tissue.
  • Cell culture, including the growth and differentiation of stem cells (iPSCs) and induced neurons (iN).
  • Perform molecular and biochemical assays on cells and rodents and human tissues. Tasks will include cell transfection, PCR, quantitative PCR, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, and molecular cloning.
  • Work independently on projects and advance the science related to the mission of the laboratory.
  • Develop and implement new assays.
  • Supervise and train students, and provide technical advice and assistance to other laboratory members.
  • Responsible for daily lab operations, including ordering and managing laboratory supplies, compliance with regulatory requirements, care and maintenance of laboratory equipment, and coordinating laboratory research projects within and outside of our laboratory group.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Physical Requirements
  • Sufficient eye-hand coordination for performing experiments using hand-held pipettes.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's Degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • 2 years of research laboratory experience with molecular and biochemical techniques, and computational analysis skills.
