The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) School of Medicine, Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center has an exciting opportunity for an Executive Director for the Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences (CURE) Program. CURE is a National Cancer Institute (NCI) program established to help support underrepresented students in biomedical research and career development. CURE utilizes a pipeline approach and provides career navigation, workforce training, and mentorship to diverse scholars at all stages of academic and career development. The UMB CURE program fulfills the mission of UMB and UMGCCC to serve communities in the catchment area and to excite and educate the next generation of biomedical researchers and healthcare providers. The UMB CURE Executive Director will fulfill the need to coordinate and align financial support for the program with the interests of its benefactors and curriculum content to benefit its scholars.
The hired candidate is eligible for a sign on bonus totaling $5,000. Half will be paid within the first 30 days of employment and the remaining half will be paid upon successful completion of probation (12 months). Current UMB employees are not eligible for the sign-on bonus.

Essential Functions: Leadership and Management
- Designs and directs the strategic plan for the UMB CURE Scholars Program, to include establishing achievable short and long-range goals within the existing framework. Identifies key stakeholders and target groups to solicit and secure their support. Ensures successful implementation of the Strategic Plan with progress assessment at regular intervals and alignment with overall goals of UMGCCC and UMB.
- Works with Principal Investigators of UMB CURE funding sources to align program content with grant aims and reporting requirements.
- Creates and implements the admissions process for newly selected scholars and scholar recruitment and retention plans with incentives for longitudinal success.
- In partnership with the Deputy Director, oversees a team of full-time staff and sets overarching programmatic direction for the UMB CURE multi-year pipeline model.
- In partnership with the Deputy Director, creates a cohesive work team that works collaboratively to achieve unit’s goals; oversees the recruitment, performance, and training of team members and continually reviews strengths and weaknesses of staff to maintain a well-trained, highly involved, and motivated team.
- Provides direct supervision of a dedicated University of Maryland School of Social Work UMB CURE Social Worker: advising on the non-clinical implications of family and community engagement strategies, scholar social-emotional and crisis management concerns and coordination of Social Worker’s clinical efforts.
- Builds the reputation of UMB CURE as a regional and national leader in youth STEM and healthcare workforce development via scholarly contributions and representation on local, national and regional associations.
External Relations
- Creates partnerships and establishes relationships with Baltimore City Public School System (BCPSS) administrators, BCPSS teachers in middle and high schools, minority-focused organizations such as historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), higher-education, workforce, and community leaders.
- Stewards corporate and community partnerships for the UMB CURE Career Navigator internship program.
- Responsible for outreach and tracking of UMB CURE alumni, including periodic campus visits.
- Provides direct supervision of UMB CURE Program Management Specialist in developing comprehensive social media and mass communication strategies. Works with the UMB Office of Communications and Public Affairs on program marketing collateral and special events.
- Attends monthly UMB CURE Parent Organization evening meetings and other small and large-scale family weekend events; promotes the programs of the Community Engagement Center to families.
- Convenes UMB CURE External Advisory Board quarterly; works with the Office of Philanthropy to recruit board members and ensure active member participation; attends select UMB CURE Shared Strategic Committee meetings.
- Represents UMB CURE at University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC) standing community engagement and trainee-related meetings; serves as an information source to UMB campus partners.
Operations and Fund Development
- Oversees and manages the program’s multiple sources of funding by analyzing expenditures with an understanding of the relationship of the program objectives and the budget process and using cost benefit analysis for budgetary expenditures. Ensures financial stability, sound financial planning and effective asset management.
- Coordinates with program grant Principal Investigators to ensure full compliance with both state and federal governmental requirements and grant objectives.
- Works closely with the philanthropy and foundation teams to cultivate potential funding sources. Reviews all foundation and corporate grant applications as well as individual donor strategies. Works with program partners in grant writing and grant submissions.
- Serves as the administrator to the UMB CURE Scholarship and Emergency Funds; works with the University of Maryland Baltimore Foundation to ensure proper fund disbursement; supports the Scholarship Fund committee and ensures recipient compliance of fund guidelines.
- Develops, reviews, and approves policies, procedures, and processes. Ensures compliance with the UMB’s Minor Policy and other risk management protocols and procedures.
- Creates and obtains University review of all Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) and Letters of Agreement (LOA) for formalized partnerships to ensure compliance and alignment with University policies and procedures. Broad oversight of articulation agreements.
- Examines and evaluates program effectiveness, in part by working with both internal and external evaluators to collect relevant data and provide comprehensive mixed-method data analysis and reports; analyzes and synthesizes programmatic data and information to ensure the successful delivery of the program; and prepares the regular publication of required and desired reports, including but not limited to manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and abstracts for presentation of results at local, national, and international scientific meetings.

Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s, Ph.D. or Ed.D from an approved institute of higher education preferred. Experience: Eight (8) years of: (a) education administrator experience with program development or (b) non-profit management experience required. Significant experience as an instructional leader with a goal of elevating student achievement preferred. Supervisory Experience: Five (5) years of direct management involved in recruitment, training and professional development of staff and directly responsible for the performance of staff preferred. Experience in or track record of successful public and private grant writing preferred. Certification/Licensure: Certification of institutional/leadership supervisory personnel or a current Maryland Administrator or Principal certification preferred. Other: Prior science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) teaching experience preferred.
