Position Purpose

The Facilities Manager advances the mission, vision, and core values of the Outdoor Programs Office ( OPO ) through program design and delivery using OPO facilities as educational tools. The Facilities Manager is responsible for managing both short- and long-term maintenance and repair of OPO facilities, and in doing so provides high-quality instruction and advising to students and student organizations.

Associates plus 5+ years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • At least 5 years of experience related to general construction, repair, and trades experience, or the equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to plan and manage programs.
  • Physical fitness and skills necessary to lead programs.
  • Knowledge of facilities operations, maintenance, and management.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
  • Strong budgetary management experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Solid understanding of an ability to implement risk management standards in a variety of outdoor settings.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to work within a team environment.
  • Possession of a valid U.S. or Canadian driver’s license and continued qualification as an “approved driver” under the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree or more.
  • Prior experience working with college-age populations, especially in student advising roles.
  • Current Wilderness First Responder certification or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.

Key Accountabilities

Description

Facilities Planning/Management/Operations
  • Plans, develops, and schedules both short- and long-term use and maintenance and repair plans for all Outdoor Program facilities, including negotiating contracts with vendors.
  • Inspects facilities and identifies, reports, and coordinates all maintenance requirements and resolves potential safety problems.
  • In collaboration with the Director, develops, implements, and maintains a master plan for new projects and schedules for needed maintenance and repair work, deciding schedule modifications and changes.
  • Selects, trains, and supervises staff in part-time, student, temporary positions, potentially including facilities assistants, Nordic grooming staff, and vehicle assistants.
  • Manages the operations of OPO’s outdoor recreation facilities throughout the state, including supervising regular inspections and maintenance.
  • In collaboration with Director, develops and implements observance of operating policies and procedures to ensure that all facilities meet Dartmouth College standards for safety and security.
  • Evaluates patterns and trends in facility use, recommending and implementing operation changes so that they meet the needs of the campus community.
  • Provides consultation to students and student groups on opportunities for volunteer work and develops and implements training.
  • Oversees the operation and maintenance of sophisticated Nordic ski grooming equipment in consultation with the Ski Team and Director. Supervises or performs maintenance on ~30 km of Nordic ski trails, ensuring proper design/grooming of trail and placement of signs for skier safety.
  • In collaboration with other OPO program staff, coordinates and supervises trails, cabins and project crews of student workers and volunteers (College alumni/ae, employees, and students). Instructs staff in technical skills necessary to do the work to include trade techniques and methods, operation and handling of equipment, and unskilled laboring tasks. Ensures instruction and compliance with Outdoor Programs and College policies and all safety standards.

Programming
  • Supports and participates in student clubs and program activities. Teaches outdoor skills and designs and implements outdoor training courses/programs in facility construction and maintenance.
  • As directed by the Director, serves as advisor to student club(s). Ensures club activities are consistent with College and OPO policies; supports the student leadership of clubs.
  • Designs, and implements outdoor programming and instruction, which will regularly include multi-day programs and work on nights, weekends, and holidays.

Department Administration
  • As a member of the Outdoor Programs staff team, participates in strategic planning for the department and supports the vision and mission of the Division of Student Affairs and the Outdoor Programs department.
  • In collaboration with the Director, interacts with local, state, and national agencies and organizations that could have an impact on Dartmouth out-of-doors activities.
  • With input from the Director, assists in developing and managing the annual budget for the operation and maintenance of OPO facilities.
  • Works with Director, Associate Director and Assistant Directors to identify and resolve risk management issues that have an impact on OPO facilities.
  • Trains and collaborates with OPO Team to keep them informed and knowledgeable of facility management policies and procedures in their role as backup.
