Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree and / or graduate coursework in student personnel, counseling, higher education administration, sports leadership, or a related field
  • 1-3 years of experience working with student-athletes in a large, NCAA Division One setting
  • One year experience (12 months) working in a higher education environment
  • Previous employment experience in an athletic academic program or environment
  • Familiarity with NCAA eligibility and Academic Performance Progress
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience working with culturally diverse populations
Job Description

The Student Development Specialist I for the Athletic Academic Center in University College reports to the Assistant Dean of University College and Director of Athletic Academic Center at Texas State University. The Student Development Specialist I ( SDS I) is responsible for providing services to student athletes enhancing their academic success while monitoring their compliance with institutional and NCAA standards for performance.

Job Duties

The SDS -I will routinely apply knowledge of professional best practices to department programs and services; work within Texas State and departmental policies and guidelines; exercise high levels of collaboration with other units university-wide; and make general decisions based upon knowledge and experience, and communicate those decisions to appropriate personnel. The SDS -I will plan, implement, and monitor assigned student athlete academic support, adjustment, and recognition programs in the AAC . Will assist with academic progress issues and record-keeping, under the supervision of the Assistant Dean & Director.

Key duties include:
  • Provide services to student-athletes in assigned sports
  • Coordinate delivery of services to student-athletes
  • Monitor academic performance and academic progress, including maintaining accurate and continuously updated records
  • Monitor NCAA initial and continuing eligibility requirements and Academic Performance
  • Serve as a liaison to coaches, faculty, and staff
  • Assist with planning and conducting recruiting activities
  • Present to student-athletes and family members at new student orientation
  • Direct students regarding academic success and transition issues
  • Provide support to Athletic Certification and Compliance personnel
  • Conduct event and yearly assessment of programs and activities
  • Assist with student-athlete recognition activities
  • Provide Study Hall supervision
  • Perform other duties as assigned
