Position Summary

The School of Art and Design at Portland State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor appointment in Printmaking: Art and Design for Interdisciplinary studies.

The ideal candidate will provide oversight of the Printmaking area and teach courses across the scope of printmaking processes which include lithography, silkscreen, intaglio, monoprints, relief and emerging digital technologies, with an emphasis on introducing non-toxic and sustainable processes. Though based in Printmaking, applicants should complement the Art and Design curriculum by extending opportunities in the development of new courses in one or more of the following areas: Narrative, drawing, social practice, public art, book arts, collage, and textiles.

The Department seeks applicants whose researchactivities are rooted in Interdisciplinary studies and/or postcolonial critiques and whose background, research, expertise, or experiences will contribute to the disciplinary diversity within the Department. The experienced candidate should have evidence of strong teaching across the range of printmaking media, and a comparable exhibition record demonstrating engagement with printmaking as a medium for engagement and experimentation. The candidate needs to show evidence of managing a printmaking studio and supervising student workers and/or part time faculty and have experience building connections with community organizations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Fundamental job duties of the position:

  • Teach 28-credits a year distributed over three 10-week terms, as determined by the Director. A typical teaching load will be 7, 4-credit courses in Art Practice and may include undergraduate to graduate level.
  • Maintain a vibrant creative research practice and a growing national to international audience.
  • Collaborate with other Art Practice faculty to oversee the BFA Art Practice program, facilities, adjunct faculty, and curricular development.
  • Provide mentoring and advising to a diverse population of students.
  • Participate in university and community service.
  • Create an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates differences.
  • Function and communicate effectively and respectfully within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Seeks opportunities to gain experience working and collaborating in diverse, multicultural, and inclusive setting with a willingness to change for continual improvement.
  • Adhere to all of PSU’s policies including the policies on Prohibited Discrimination & Harassment and the Professional Standards of Conduct.

Required / Minimum Qualifications

  • MFA in Printmaking or equivalent or closely related field.
  • Expertise in teaching traditional and newer technology-based printmaking media at the university level beyond GTA.
  • Be conversant in interdisciplinary contemporary media, methods, and focus on diversity and inclusion.
  • A record of community outreach activities.
  • A secondary related teaching interest such as: Illustration, narrative, drawing/collage, social practice, public art, book arts and textiles.
  • Experience in various teaching methodologies – in person, on line (asynchronous and synchronous) and hybrid.
  • A vibrant creative research practice and strong professional accomplishments in the art field.
  • Successful completion of a background check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • We are seeking a candidate who identifies with one or more of the following:
  • Experience in storytelling, illustration, narrative formats that may use emerging technologies or reintroduce older technologies in interesting ways. We are also interested in printmaking as a medium of social activism, protest and resistance.
  • A background working in a collaborative educational environment and team-teaching.
  • Interest in expanding the definition of 2D media by making new connections with technology, photography or other art media. Use and build on the tools available – from projectors, photo lab, laser cutters, CNC router to large scale and digital fabrication.
  • An interest in curatorial practice, display strategies, installation or extending the classroom into the City of Portland.
