Position Summary

The College of the Arts (COTA) and the School of Art + Design at Portland State University invite applications for an Assistant Professor of Art Practice in Photography, commencing Fall 2023. This is a tenure track, 1.0 FTE, 9-month position.

The School of Art + Design seeks an artist deeply engaged in current photographic technologies and processes, theoretical discourses, and expanded creative practice in the context of contemporary art. The successful candidate will teach all levels of darkroom, digital, and experimental photography to undergraduate Art Practice majors and non-majors and teach courses in our BFA thesis sequence and MFA programs.

We seek candidates who are experienced educators with an active and significant record of achievement as an artist. A successful candidate will also have a proven record in research, service, and pedagogical approaches that incorporates and addresses accessible, diverse, and inclusive education in an interdisciplinary art education setting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach 28-credits a year distributed over three 10-week terms, as determined by the Director. A typical teaching load will be 7, 4-credit courses in Art Practice and may include undergraduate to graduate level.
  • Maintain a vibrant creative research practice and a growing national to international audience
  • Collaborate with other Art Practice faculty to oversee the BFA Art Practice program, facilities, adjunct faculty, and curricular development
  • Provide mentoring and advising to a diverse population of students
  • Participate in university and community service.
  • Create an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates differences.
  • Function and communicate effectively and respectfully within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Seeks opportunities to gain experience working and collaborating in diverse, multicultural, and inclusive setting with a willingness to change for continual improvement.
  • Adhere to all of PSU’s policies including the policies on Prohibited Discrimination & Harassment and the Professional Standards of Conduct.

Required / Minimum Qualifications

  • Master of Fine Arts in Art, Photography/Media, or related field, or foreign equivalent.
  • A vibrant expansive creative research practice and strong professional accomplishments in the art field.
  • Candidates must possess expertise in Photo/Media and an instructional record demonstrating how they have worked in expansive ways, inclusive of other disciplines.
  • Evidence of incorporating both traditional techniques and new technology into pedagogy and practice.
  • Minimum of three years of full-time teaching experience at the college/university level beyond a teaching assistantship.
  • Experience in various teaching methodologies – in-person, online (asynchronous and synchronous), and hybrid.
  • Evidence of successfully promoting a teaching/learning environment that advances diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • A record of community outreach and engagement activities in research and pedagogy. that aligns with PSU’s mission to “Let Knowledge Serve the City.”
  • The “successful completion of a background check”.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in curriculum development and interdisciplinary coursework.
  • Experience in community-based learning, curatorial practice, display strategies, installation, or extending learning beyond the campus classroom.
