Music Faculty (Director of Bands) – Clinical or Tenure Track (Assistant or Associate)

The School of Theatre and Music at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) invites applications for a full-time clinical or tenure (assistant or associate) faculty position, Director of Bands. The successful candidate will be a superb conductor and educator who will work with colleagues to sustain and expand an innovative and robust program dedicated to students from diverse backgrounds.

Primary duties include leading ensembles, as well as overseeing the UIC Bands, and providing service to departmental, school, university, and interdisciplinary units. Service includes recruiting students to music degree programs, involving members of the campus community in ensembles, developing strong relationships with Chicago city and regional music educators, and hosting annual band festivals. All faculty members contribute to the university's general education program as needed and serve on committees. Other teaching duties will be determined by qualifications, preference, and institutional needs. Continuing academic year (nine-month) appointment begins 16 August 2023. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Qualifications: For tenure track appointment, terminal degree in Music or Music Education (D.M.A., Ph.D.) by 16 August 2023. For clinical track appointment, master’s degree with significant work completed towards a terminal degree in Music (D.M.A., Ph.D.) or Music Education (D.M.A., Ed.D., or Ph.D.). Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, access, and belonging in teaching. Demonstrated ability to educate differently prepared music students from city school districts. A record of active engagement and/or leadership with regional high school music teachers and their programs. A record of, or clear potential for, invited conducting engagements, presentations at conferences, and/or publications. Evidence of strong administrative, collaborative, and interpersonal skills. For associate level appointment, qualification above and a sustained record of excellent teaching, significant scholarly and/or artistic work with recognition on a regional and national level and promise for future growth, and accomplishments in service in support of the unit, university, and profession.

Preferred Qualifications: Terminal degree in Music (D.M.A., Ph.D.) or Music Education (D.M.A., Ed.D., or Ph.D.) earned by date of hire. Significant experience teaching in secondary schools and/or university settings. Ability to contribute to a future music education degree program.
