The School of Theatre and Music at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track (assistant or associate) faculty position, music theory.

We seek a music theory scholar and teacher with the facility to engage a diverse set of musical repertoires and methodologies; who will take a leadership role in the development and implementation of curriculum, and teach the core sequence in the theory area. The successful candidate will approach the discipline as a creative, dynamic, and global tradition, attributing equal value to aural as well as written ways of knowing and organizing sound.

All tenure-track faculty members contribute to the university's general education program as needed and provide service. Teaching duties will be determined by qualifications, preference, and institutional needs. Continuing academic year (nine-month) appointment begins 16 August 2023. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Terminal degree in Music Theory (Ph.D.) by 16 August 2023. A record of, or clear potential for, peer- reviewed publications and presentations at conferences, and demonstrated leadership potential in the field. Demonstrated success in teaching at the college/university level, including graduate assistantships. A proven commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, access, and belonging in teaching and/or scholarship. Evidence of administrative, collaborative, and interpersonal skills. For tenure consideration, a sustained record of excellent teaching, significant scholarly recognition on a regional and national level and promise for future growth, and accomplishments in service in support of the unit, university, and profession.
 

Preferred Qualifications

Competence in and engagement with vernacular, popular, indigenous, and non-Western musical practices. Expertise in performance practice. An understanding of and experience teaching populations that reflect UIC’s diverse student body. Experience with curriculum development across undergraduate music degrees, and an ability to help realize a future music education degree program.
