Columbia Basin College ('CBC' or the 'College') seeks a Director for Veterans Education & Transition Services (V.E.T.S.) to be responsible for managing the daily operations of the V.E.T.S. Department. This position will provide academic advising, develop academic plans, process quarterly registrations, and assist with all steps in the veteran certification process. The Director is also responsible for creating a culture of trust and connectedness across the campus community to promote wellbeing and success for veterans. This position will work closely with the Veterans Certifying Official and other campus personnel to track veteran student progress and to develop activities and programs to enhance veteran student retention. The Director for Veterans Education & Transition Services reports to the Dean for Student Retention & Completion.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Manage the daily operations of the Veteran Education & Transition Services Department, including supervision, scheduling, evaluation and training of staff and student workers;
  • Provide academic advising to veterans and other students;
  • Assist students in accessing internal and external resources to address their academic needs;
  • Develop educational academic plans while working in collaboration with Completion Coaches leading to a degree or certificate;
  • In coordination with the Veterans Certifying Official, ensure compliance with all federal and state legislation, rules, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to veteran student benefits and perform all certifying tasks to facilitate veteran eligibility;
  • Inform students and the public on the Veteran Services program content, policies, procedures and activities;
  • Ensure all veterans receive academic, career, and financial advice before challenges become overwhelming;
  • Provide supervision to any on-site Vet Corps individuals who may be assigned to the College and collaborate in ways to facilitate and support student success for the veteran community within CBC;
  • Work closely with College counselors to facilitate, as needed, short-term personal counseling for veterans;
  • Identify external community-based organizations serving veterans and establish a network to recruit veterans to the College and to align and coordinate various services for veterans;
  • Assess unique veteran needs and collaborate with other College departments to implement teaching, learning and support strategies to increase veteran student success and retention;
  • Provide comprehensive professional development for faculty and staff on issues and challenges unique to veterans;
  • Utilize a uniform set of data tools to collect and track information on veterans, including demographics, retention, and degree completion;
  • Pursue external funding opportunities to enhance services to veteran students; and
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an institutionally accredited college or university;
  • One (1) year experience in advising, educational planning and/or counseling in secondary or post-secondary education;
  • Two (2) years management and/or supervisory experience; and
  • Experience working with military populations, in a military culture or military service.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree from an institutionally accredited college or university;
  • Experience working with and supporting Veterans;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups to meet program goals;
  • Experience in budget management and development;
  • Commitment to diversity and cultural sensitivity; and
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a twelve (12) month per year, full-time position. It is an overtime exempt position with general work hours of Monday through Thursday 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Friday 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.; however, work hours may vary due to work demands and some evening and weekend work may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS :

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility including having the ability to move materials on a regular basis such as files, books, office equipment, etc. and travel between buildings on campus. Manual dexterity and coordination are required to operate equipment such as computer keyboard, calculator, and standard office equipment.

Work environment includes office and other settings as appropriate. It is a fast paced and sometimes stressful services environment. The noise level in the work area is typical of most office environments with telephones, personal interruptions, and background noises.
