Position Summary

The Department of Industrial Design at Metropolitan State University of Denver invites applications for a tenure-track/tenure faculty member at the rank of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor. This is a nine-month appointment that will begin in August 2023 for the 2023-2024 academic year. Tenured faculty from another institution will be given appropriate consideration for their tenure and experience when applying for this position.

The Department of Industrial Design at MSU Denver has an active student Industrial Designers Society of America ( IDSA ) chapter and faculty involved in the national leadership of IDSA . The Industrial Design B.S. is accredited by the National Association for Schools of Art and Design.

We are particularly interested in applicants who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for under-represented and historically minoritized groups.

Duties/Responsibilities

This position requires the faculty to teach 18 credit hours per academic year, maintain 5 office hours per week to include advising/consultation with students, and perform scholarly activities. The successful candidate is expected to teach and potentially update existing courses and develop new courses in related design fields such as, but not limited to: Industrial Design Studio Courses, Technical Design Visualization, Materials and Fabrication courses, Design Technologies, UI/UX, AR/VR/MR, AND UI/UX, AR/VR/MR, and other ID-related fields.

The faculty member must serve on departmental, college, and university-level committees and fulfill other service duties as assigned by the department chair. Participation in program and curriculum development and assessment activities is expected. Departmental service with student recruitment and outreach, along with acting as a liaison with businesses to build beneficial relationships for student engagement will be encouraged. The successful candidate must be active in professional development and scholarly activities relevant to the discipline and must have the ability to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of a diverse urban population.

Required Qualifications

The successful Industrial Design candidate must have, at minimum:
A master’s degree in a related field, plus four years of relevant professional experience in a recognizable company that produced real goods, OR
A doctorate degree in a related field, with a minimum three years of professional work experience in a recognizable company that produced real goods

Preferred Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design
  • Has taught a minimum of 72 credit hours (equivalent to 4 years with a 3-3 teaching load) as the primary instructor of College-level courses at a nationally accredited institution (in U.S. or other country)
  • Experience with developing course materials, teaching with technology, and curriculum development work
  • Professional experience that includes work dealing specifically with the interface between design and manufacturing; experience in Advanced and Emergent Manufacturing Technologies; or experience that includes educating or fostering junior-level designers and developing strategic plans.
