Overview
Utah State University's Department of Theatre Arts is seeking a full-time, nine-month tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor of Theatre Education & Theatre Arts. The ideal candidate will have a strong record of teaching within a K-12 curriculum (or extensive, related experiences teaching these age groups), experience teaching in a university setting, and demonstrate a commitment to mentoring and student success. The position is defined as 50% creative activity or research, 40% teaching, 10% service.

This is a tenure-track position beginning with the 2023-2024 academic year anticipated to start in August 2023. Review of applications will begin January 6, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled.


Responsibilities
  • Teaching load to include:
    • Methods of Teaching Theatre K-6
    • Drama Across the Curriculum K-12
    • Applied Theatre
    • Clinical Experience in Teaching
    • Student Teaching Supervision
    • Other areas as appropriate to department needs
  • Supervise student teaching and clinical field experiences, including regular contact with both the students and the mentor teachers.
  • Participate in the annual portfolio review of BFA Theatre Education students.
  • Mentor undergraduate student projects and grants (research, creative, and/or pedagogical).
  • Participate in recruitment and retention activities, including attending recruiting events in and/or out of state.
  • Serve on department, college, and university committees.
  • Create and produce creative activity/research to remain current in the profession.
  • Potentially head the BA Theatre Arts Program and the Theatre Arts Minor, which includes monthly cohort meetings and registration advising.
    Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications for Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor
  • Terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in theatre education, theatre for youth, or theatre with substantial K-12 education background/experience.
  • At least 1 year of teaching experience at the university level.
  • Experience teaching theatre with students grades K-12, preferably in public or private schools.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct in a university setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach applied theatre.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally/regionally to supervise pre-service student teachers.
  • Job offer is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check.

Minimum Qualifications for Appointment at the rank of Associate Professor

In addition to the minimum qualifications for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, initial appointment at the rank of Associate Professor shall require:
  • Current rank of Associate Professor in Theatre at an accredited institution,
  • A minimum of 6 years of effective teaching at the university level,
  • An excellent record as a creative artist or published researcher commensurate with appointment as an Associate Professor, and
  • A minimum of 6 years of significant university service.
  • Initial appointment at the rank of Associate Professor shall be without tenure, and a timeline to the tenure decision will be agreed upon at time of hire and documented in the offer letter and role statement.

Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in theatre.
  • 2 or more years of teaching experience at the university level.
  • Demonstrated passion and dedication to student success.
  • Valid teacher certification/licensure in theatre (K-12) and working knowledge of state licensing requirements, curriculum standards, and resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach directing and/or playwriting.
  • Experience supervising and providing evidence-based, constructive feedback to pre-service student teachers.
  • Experience advising/mentoring undergraduate students, especially original undergraduate research, creative projects, and educational initiatives.

The professional arm of the Department is the Lyric Repertory Company, which provides USU students the opportunity to transition their craft from the academy to the profession, with productions during the summer as well as the academic year.
