Position, Department: Learning Specialist for Student Athletes, Academic Achievement Center, Academic Affairs

Type of Position: Part-time Temporary, Non-Exempt

Work Schedule, Hours per week: varies, 12 hours per week

Pay Grade/Pay Range: 21.96-27.45 *Actual pay depends on qualifications

Benefits Category: Partial benefits



Position Summary: Provide one on one and/or group instruction primarily to student athletes as well as students in the Academic Achievement Center. Assist students with interventions and strategies to learn effectively in all content areas. Other tasks will include individualizing instruction, diagnosing learning barriers, and constructing student learning plans. May also include directing students to needed campus resources and responding to online requests for class support, as well as rectifying software issues.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Education, Reading, English, Sports leadership, or like field
  • Experience working with student athletes at the community college/college level
  • Experience working with at-risk students
  • Afternoon and evening availability

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching at the Community College level, and ability to work with diverse groups, and experience working in a tutor capacity

Position Details - Job duties include but are not limited to:

WORKING ONE ON ONE WITH STUDENTS—ENROLLED IN AAC COURSES Provide one on one and/or group instruction primarily to student athletes as well as students in the Academic Achievement Center. Courses are administered one-on-one to students of any skill level. Performance is acceptable when the learning specialist:

a. Administers diagnostics to place student in the appropriate level in the course.

b. Provides individualized instruction to follow lesson plans.

c. Accurately scores student work with detailed feedback.

d. Models appropriate cognitive learning techniques.

e. Gives feedback in a timely manner.

f. Provides examples when necessary during explanation.

g. Employs courteous manner to open/close session.

h. Facilitates pedagogical support to content tutors.

WORKING ONE ON ONE WITH STUDENTS- WALK-IN AAC SUPPORT FOR JCCC CLASSES Provide feedback and example when necessary during explanation. Provide diagnostic and intervention techniques for language barriers, support for students with disabilities, and remediation as needed. Performs other duties as necessary. Performance is acceptable when the learning specialist:

a. Provides feedback and example when necessary during explanation.

b. Creates opportunity for student to master learning skills, and in-time remediation of knowledge and language gaps, as well as connecting student with needed resources.

c. Investigates, identifies and communicates professor expectations and instructs students in the means to produce needed class assignments or products.

d. Supports student development with instruction in the following: goal setting, personal organization, time management, communicating with professors, navigating campus culture, reading textbooks, annotating, taking notes, information processing techniques, test preparation, and test-taking strategies. Academic coaching requires extensive diagnosis and the planning of specific and appropriate interventions.

e. Supports student technology needs. Assist students with Canvas or other LMS issues. Includes instruction in assistive technology needs, accessing and utilizing stumail, registering for Pearson MyLab or McGraw Hill Connect. Assistance using Google stumail, Google Drive, Google Docs, Papercut, and MyJCCC. Assistance with basic computer literacy including Windows file management and Microsoft Office.

f. Provides support for students via Zoom or other online format.

g. Monitors student-athlete moderated study labs, study time, and communicates with coaches as needed.

h. Provides assistance with adaptive learning tools, such as e-texts, screen readers and other assistive technology.

i. Employs courteous manner to open/close session.

j. Performs other duties as needed.

WORKING ONE ON ONE WITH STUDENTS- WALK-IN AAC SUPPORT FOR PLACEMENT TEST PREPARATION Provide review materials after diagnostic measures to identify student needs for placement exams. Performance is acceptable when the learning specialist:

a. Administers diagnostic to place student in the appropriate level and materials.

b. Provides individualized instruction to remediate learning needs.

c. Accurately scores student work with detailed feedback.

d. Models appropriate cognitive learning and test-taking techniques.

e. Gives feedback in a timely manner.

f. Provides examples when necessary during explanation.

g. Employs courteous manner to open/close session.

PERFORM ACADEMIC ORIENTATIONS, TEST AUTOPIES, AND WORKSHOPS Guide and instruct students through curriculum to support student development. Performance is acceptable when the learning specialist:

a. Facilitates academic orientations with topics including: Personal organization, time management, note-taking, campus resource usage, campus computer systems.

b. Directs students to needed resources on campus.

c. Addresses test errors from content area classes in a thorough analysis of graded tests. Assists students in metacognitive processes to address challenges.

d. Provides in-class workshops in study skills, time management, and other requested study skills-related topics.

e. Follows FERPA guidelines with confidential student information, including grading, student records and professor-provided confidential tests.

f. Utilizes appropriate modeling techniques.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - Attend department meetings and trainings, as determined by the Director of the center. Observed in lab setting, given constructive feedback to enhance the student experience as needed. Performance is acceptable when the specialist:

a. Is Engaged and receptive to suggestions and feedback to support students more efficiently.

b. Regularly attends departmental meetings and trainings.

c. Has a current understanding of their role in supporting the college's mission.

d. Communicates within the department, both personally and online.
