Director of Comprehensive Advising
About the Opportunity
Reporting to the Senior Director of the Office of Global Services , and collaborating with the OGS leadership team, the Director ensures compliance with federal regulations, and serves in the capacities of Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).
In collaboration with the OGS leadership team, the Director guides three direct reports and an overall comprehensive advising team to deliver proactive comprehensive advising to international students at Northeastern University's global network within the U.S. The Director will demonstrate a commitment to the ongoing professional development of staff at all levels, and leading by example, fosters a culture of collaboration, mutual respect, and teamwork while maintaining an environment that values diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
Recognizing the value of collaboration and a transparent flow of communication, the Director of Comprehensive Advising, along with other members of the OGS Leadership Team, engages campus partners, including enrollment management, academic departments, co-op and career advising, University Registrar, student financial services, health and wellness, human resources, and public safety, and others. Disseminating critical information both internally and externally, the Director serves as a subject matter expert and remains available to provide advice and counsel as needs arise across the University.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Comprehensive Advising Leadership
The Director will lead and guide international student and scholar advising that is comprehensive, student-centered, and consistent with immigration regulations and guidance provided by the Department of Homeland Security.
- Manage the comprehensive advising model to ensure accurate and
timely services that foster student success and
satisfaction.
- Collaborate with OGS leadership and campus partners to provide
student-centered approaches to proactive comprehensive advising in
regard to pre-arrival, arrival, Orientation, enrollment, retention,
employment, correction of status, and all services that contribute
to international student success.
- Contribute to International Student Orientation and other
transition workshops with timely, sensitive, appropriately designed
modules that contribute to proactive advising.
- Oversee creation and maintenance of advising content through
websites, templated emails, instructional videos, OGS knowledge
base etc.
- Establish, evolve, and manage a clear escalation matrix to
support OGS-USA leadership teams to guide a student-centered,
supportive framework.
- Work collaboratively with the leadership team to review,
resolve, and provide guidance on complex international student and
scholar cases
- Manage complex case escalations.
- Oversee maintenance and management of the OGS advising policy
manual with regular updates.
- Provide comprehensive advising on change of status, ability of
individuals on different non-immigrant status classifications to
study at NU, etc.
- Keep current with new Department of Homeland Security policy
and guidance, and establish a comprehensive approach for the
advising staff to utilize in their daily work, and modify as
needed.
- Design and deliver comprehensive compliance training modules
for campus partners to enhance advising and services for
international students and scholars.
- In collaboration with OGS-USA leadership team, co-manage and
participate in the DSO on call rotation to support any after- hours
urgent inquiries or requests for assistance from international
students.
Team Leadership & Management
The Director will inspire, motivate, and manage a team of 30+ to deliver an exceptional service. Specific responsibilities will be to:
- Manage a large, talented staff in a fast paced environment at a
highly innovative institution.
- Plan, organize resources, assign and delegate activities and
measure results to achieve organization's expectations.
- Manage change by providing the needed structure and transparent
environment. Coach employee/team through changes that impact their
day-to-day work.
- Lead, engage and motivate employees; actively support a

- Provide an effective process for performance management and
development that provides measurable goals, clear expectations, and
solid direction to each team member.
- Provide frequent feedback, recognition and coaching to ensure
high performance, professional growth, and development. Plan for
and support employees in career and professional development
opportunities aligned with organization's needs.
- Lead and guide employee/team to develop new skills, knowledge
and abilities that will enhance their work and
development.
- Assist employees in navigating business processes and resolving
issues.
- Review staffing needs including developing job descriptions and
recruitment plans. Lead the selection and onboarding
process.
- Address unsatisfactory employee performance including
developing, delivering, and monitoring performance improvement
plans.
- Facilitate the resolution of employee conflicts.
- Administer and ensure compliance with university policies and
procedures.
Collaborative Leadership and Management
The Director will be highly collaborative with ample opportunity to partner internally and externally to develop creative, proactive solutions to complex situations.
- Under minimal supervision, work with the OGS-USA Leadership
team to oversee all aspects and processes related to the issuance
of Initial Certificates of Eligibility (I-20, DS-2019) for incoming
F-1 students and J-1 students and scholars.
- In collaboration the OGS-USA Leadership, ensure the delivery of
term-based process deadlines, timely production of I-20s, student
and internal communications, support strategies, etc..
- Assist the PDSO/RO with institutional compliance requirements
such as Recertification, Re-designation out of cycle reviews,
etc.
- Assist with SEVIS reporting and record keeping requirements
through Sunapsis, Banner, and other student record management
platforms.
- Collaborate with OGS-USA leadership to monitor and resolve
situations impacting international student and scholar SEVIS
compliance.
- Ensure that OGS services, processes, communications, etc.
support student and scholar compliance with the requirements of
their respective non-immigrant status classification.
- Analyze enrollment, compliance, and other related data in order
to ensure individual and institutional compliance with federal
regulations.
- Oversee the various aspects work authorization for eligible F-1
and J-1 students.
- Develop support structures for non-NU sponsored students,
scholars.
- Collaborate with OGS team members to provide professional and
high-quality customer service.
- Work collaboratively with OGS teams on special projects as
needed. Participate in and support OGS programs and University
events that engage the Northeastern international
community.
- Serve on committees as appointed by the Senior
Director.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's degree in a relevant field is required.
- 8+ years of demonstrated experience in (a) international
student and scholar advising; (b) experience developing
collaborative, proactive services for international students; (c)
supervising professional staff.
- Substantial and up-to-date knowledge of immigration regulations
and best-advising practices.
- Demonstrated proficiency in providing student-centered guidance
to professional staff in the areas of advising, SEVIS events
reporting, student/scholar services, etc.
- Knowledge and proficiency in software and technological
applications including, but not limited to, Sunapsis, ServiceNow
and other related applications serving international students and
scholars.
- High level of effective communication and interpersonal skills
are essential.
- Cross-cultural experience, fluency in two or more languages,
experience living abroad are highly desirable.
- Demonstrated intercultural sensitivity, empathy, and emotional
intelligence.
- US citizenship or legal permanent residency required to serve
as DSO/ARO.
