Director of Communications

About the Opportunity

The Director of Communications leads Khoury College of Computer Sciences Communications and Creative Services team. The Director is responsible for strategic planning, execution and management of all College communications and creative services. The Director reports to the Dean of Khoury College and overseas a team responsible for all multimedia creative services, content management and communications.

The Director of Communications will work with the Dean and leadership team to develop a communications strategy and they will implement a comprehensive and integrated communications plan to communicate the Dean's vision to a variety of stakeholders. They will use multiple types of content such as print and digital and will deliver them across multiple platforms. The Director will also lead the Khoury Brand team and will ensure that all materials and communications across all campuses and programs are delivered to the highest standard and will ensure brand compliance. In addition to being a strategist and leader, this position is a content developer and will regularly write key communications.

Responsibilities:

Strategy & Execution
  • Develop Khoury communications strategy including College mission/strategy, leadership philosophy/approach, faculty research and impact and performance-driven culture across the institution.
  • Implement a comprehensive and integrated communications plan to communicate the Dean's vision to a variety of stakeholders, utilizing a multimedia approach across multiple platforms.
  • Develop, manage and execute communication and stakeholder engagement plans to elevate awareness of faculty research and thought leadership, including the school's expertise in key thematic areas. This includes message development, media planning, stakeholder communications and partnership with Northeastern marketing and web teams as needed on content planning and execution.
  • Help identify and communicate the broad themes and trends at the University and in higher education including potential societal impact in those areas.


Executive Communications
  • Support the development and execution of executive positioning and visibility plans. Includes messaging and narrative development as well as results-focused media targeting, speaking engagements, organization and influencer engagement, and social media presence.
  • Provide leadership positioning to support strategic goals, organizational values, and vision, utilizing written and digital communications, events, stakeholder engagement and reporting.


Management and Assessment
  • Manage and develop three direct reports and a total team of seven communications and marketing professionals.
  • Implement assessment methods to understand and grow communications impact. Support ongoing competitive tracking, media monitoring and metrics/assessment initiatives executed by the team.
  • Independently manage a significant volume and variety of communications with a diplomatic mindset and focus on confidentiality.
  • Working with the senior leadership, anticipate, draft and edit crises communication as needed.
  • Other communications related projects as needed.
  • Develop and streamline team processes, communication flows and project management to maximize productivity and systems.


Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism or related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10+ years of experience in strategic marketing and/or communications, preferably in higher education, a related non-profit or a complex and fast-moving corporate environment.
  • Exceptional writing skills, with the demonstrated ability to write persuasively on a wide variety of topics and to adapt for a range of audiences.
  • Flexible, creative thinker open to new ideas and changing priorities within a fast growing, dynamic organization.
  • Must capably balance multiple competing deadlines and high priority tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work with distributed stakeholders to drive a communication strategy. Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Experienced manager and team leader with demonstrated ability to coach and develop staff.
  • Technical and digital experience with diverse platforms including web and social media.
