Job Description:

The Director of Marketing & Communications develops an overarching strategy for marketing and communications on behalf of the George A. Smathers Libraries. The Director reports to the Dean of University Libraries and works closely with the library deans, Director of Advancement & External Relations, library faculty and staff, and University Relations to create, implement and oversee communications campaigns that effectively describe and promote the Libraries at the local, state and national levels. This position oversees the creation, curation, and editing of content across library units, including the overall Smathers Libraries' social media accounts, websites, promotional materials, publications, and more.

Designer and Content Creator
  • Conceptualizes, designs, and produces printed and digital newsletter (News from the SOURCE), brochures, promotional pieces, information sheets, annual reports, flyers, bookmarks, and other necessary materials for development/communications activities.
  • Prepares news releases and news pages for the Libraries' website.
  • Serves as the official photographer at library-sponsored academic, development, and social events, as well as being on-call for photo opportunities on a daily ongoing basis.
  • Ensures consistency of messaging and branding and utilizes research, best practices, and evaluation to determine the most effective ways to communicate.

Strategic Communications Planning and Management
  • Works closely with library administration to develop, implement, and evaluate a strategic communications plan to promote and advance the Libraries.
  • Creates and oversees relevant communications for the Smathers Libraries, ensuring compelling and strategic messages that support the Libraries' mission, vision, and values.
  • Collaborates with library faculty and staff to develop and implement communication plans for unit-led, library activities.
  • Serves as spokesperson for Libraries among other groups at the university and with external media contacts.
  • Oversees social media efforts, developing new policies and guidelines, and ensures a unified approach across the Libraries through data tracking and web monitoring.
  • Works closely with the Libraries' Director of Advancement & External Relations, Grants Manager, library administration, faculty and staff to publicize and promote library donations, needs, activities, and achievements in news articles and to the media.
  • Coordinates publicity to stimulate donor cultivation and ensures that appropriate donor recognition objectives are achieved.
  • Establishes budget for Public Relations and Marketing promotional materials and ensures that costs are within established budgetary guidelines.

Interpreting, developing and maintaining communications policies and standards
  • Understands and interprets communications policies and procedures of the Libraries and University Relations.
  • Provides coaching to library employees in matters pertaining to communications, processes, and style that support the Libraries' objectives.
  • Masters a working knowledge of AP Style of media communications, the publication standards of UF's marketing and publication offices, as well as in-house printing operations and outside printing/publishing vendors, to ensure university standards in communications are met.
  • Develops a library brand and style guide, including templates, and monitors and disseminates UF brand policies.

Professional Development and Service
  • Stays current in best practices as established by the University of Florida, academic library community, and communications professionals.
  • Serves on various university, division, and departmental committees.
  • Serves as liaison on the Library Leadership Board.
  • Serves as a liaison to University media relations and represents the Libraries in the UF Communicators Network.

Other Duties

Participates in staff development and training activities as required to broaden and improve skills and to become more familiar with technological innovation in libraries, as well as rapidly evolving software in the graphics and photography fields.

Expected Salary:

$87,000 minimum salary; The Smathers Libraries offer a salary commensurate with experience and credentials

Minimum Requirements:

Master's degree in an appropriate area and six years of relevant experience; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and eight years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in an appropriate area of specialization.
  • Four years of experience in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, or relevant field.
  • Demonstrable writing, design and communication skills that reflect an understanding of communicating for different media and diverse audiences.
  • Ability to condense complex messages into consistent, easy to understand messaging, along with the ability to vary delivery to match audiences and media, as appropriate.
  • Experience should demonstrate excellent writing, verbal and design skills, particularly press releases and copy writing.
  • Graphic design and photo editing proficiency utilizing Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Demonstrated ability to gather data, plan, prioritize, synthesize and organize information.
  • Demonstrated ability to set objectives and priorities, to effectively articulate and advocate the Libraries' goals and programs, and to link local priorities with university efforts.
  • Demonstrated digital photography skills.
  • Commitment to contributing to a respectful and caring community for all, including individuals of diverse backgrounds, experiences, races, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientation, and perspectives.
  • Good analytic and inter-personal skills, excellent communication skills (oral and written), tact and sensitivity toward the needs of others.
  • Demonstrated professionalism and accomplishment relevant to the responsibilities of the position.
  • Initiative, flexibility, and the ability to adapt and work creatively in a complex, rapidly changing academic environment.
  • Experience with libraries and/or higher education.
