Fire Suppression Technician

Job Summary

Facilities Management (FM) encourages applications for a Fire Suppression Technician ! This position will be responsible for inspection, testing, maintenance and installation of new and existing fire suppression systems. The role will develop a detailed understanding of the functioning alarm systems.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Functional Testing, Code Competency, & Documentation

• Perform functional testing, inspections, and certifications of existing fire suppression systems: water flow and tamper switches, pre-action, dry pipe, air compressors, back flow, and other related system/components.
• Document all deficiencies, changes, and problems. Notify all relevant parties of functional systems failures or problems for securing future funding sources.
• Maintain fire alarm/fire suppression system records for all systems on campus including: record drawings, testing results, valve inspections, building inceptions, back flow certification, maintenance and repair reports, and technical reference materials on a per building fire alarm/suppression system basis.

Repair/Maintenance, Code Compliance, & Work Scheduling

• Perform maintenance, installations and modifications on campus fire sprinkler systems to ensure normal operation. Maintenance/installation includes troubleshooting and repairing tamper switches, water flow switches, air compressors, piping, back flow valve components, sprinkler heads, test valves and all other inherit components of fire suppression systems.
• Inform all relevant parties of the work schedule and of the status of the buildings' system.

Knowledge of Trade, Systems, Campus Standards & Protocols

• Inspect contractor installations of fire suppression systems, coordinate system deactivation to allow for contractor work on existing systems and assist in interconnection between existing and new suppression systems. Includes the fire alarm control panel deactivation and notification of proper parties for short-term outages, following a pre-agreed upon protocol.
• Enforce contractual, CUB Standard requirements and work procedures and codes, and participate in and chip in to CUB’s acceptance decision for the final fire alarm/suppression system test on all new contractor installed systems.

Project Support & Inter-Departmental Collaboration

• Work in conjunction with CUB Project Planners, Engineers, Consultants, and building occupants on projects, and participate in contract document and shop drawing reviews.
• Aid in developing and editing CUB Standards as well as fire alarm and suppression procedures and policies.

Communication & Personal Growth

• Maintain and improve knowledge of technical competency on fire suppression systems. Use this information as a key resource for instructing/informing CUB campus entities, including faculty, staff and emergency response personnel on facilities component improvements and theory and operation of all fire suppression system devices.
• Responsible for completing material issuance requests and purchase requests to procure any material needed. Limited to $1,000 per event purchase at the FM Construction Stores without the approval of supervisor.
• To complete required duties, this position will need to drive a State vehicle and maintain a valid State of Colorado drivers license.
• Work collaboratively with other Trades work units and train them on pertinent systems as needed.

• This is a full-time, in-person position. This position may be required to work alternate or extended shifts at the discretion of the work unit supervisor.
• This role is designated as Essential Services. A designation of Essential Services means that the employee is required to report to work at times when the campus is closed due to fire, explosion, inclement weather or other emergency situations.

• The salary for this position is $70,000 annually.

What We Require

• Three years of experience in fire sprinkler installation, testing, and maintenance as they pertain to fire suppression systems.
• Appropriate education or completion of a formalized apprenticeship will substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.
• Must be a Colorado resident to apply.
• Must have a valid Colorado driver's license.

What We Would Like You To Have

• Experience in an institutional setting.
• Current Backflow Protection Assembly Tester Certification (ASSE preferred). Applicant must attain certification within 12 months of hire if they do not currently possess it.
• Five years of experience in fire sprinkler testing, installation, and maintenance.
• Current City of Denver Installer/Inspector's License for fire/life safety systems.
