Professor of the Practice in Global Public Health

The Program for Global Public Health and the Common Good at Boston College invites doctoral level public health scientists (e.g., medicine, nursing, epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy, population health sciences) and persons with equivalent qualifications to apply for a Professor of the Practice position in global public health. This appointment will be at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, depending on the candidate’s qualifications and experience, and within the school at Boston College (i.e. Connell School of Nursing, Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences, or the School of Social Work) that best fits the candidate’s qualifications and experience.  Professor of the Practice appointments at Boston College are full-time, full-benefits, non-tenure track positions, with a three-year contract and the possibility of regular renewal and promotion.

Our ideal candidate is an inspirational public health educator who has done public heath work in low-income and middle-income countries and has a demonstrated commitment to serving under-resourced and neglected populations. We are looking for a person with field experience, documented leadership skills and an approach to public health that fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, partnership and innovation.

The Program currently offers a highly regarded 6-course (18-credit) undergraduate minor, launched in 2019, and plans to open a new 12-course (36-credit) major in fall 2023. The goal of the minor is to provide basic literacy in global health and public health to students who wish to gain understanding of how social, economic, political and environmental factors influence the health of people and populations in today’s world.  The goal of the major will be to provide students with a deep understanding of the theory and practice of public health and prepare them for graduate study and professional careers in domestic or global public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, medicine, nursing and related fields. The major will also prepare students for professional careers as public health practitioners in federal, state or local health departments; international organizations; social service agencies; environmental organizations; NGOs; and civil society organizations.

Responsibilities: Professors of the Practice at Boston College are expected to teach the equivalent of 6 courses in each academic year, typically 3 courses per semester.  This new faculty member will have responsibility for teaching 4 classroom courses each academic year within the minor or the new major for Global Public Health and the Common Good and for mentoring students in the two-semester Capstone Experience. Capstone mentoring across two semesters is considered the equivalent of teaching two courses. This 6-credit Capstone will be the culmination of each student’s undergraduate experience in global public health and will require the application of theoretical knowledge to solve a public health problem in a real-world setting.

Requirements:

• Doctoral degree (PhD, DrPH, MD or equivalent) with training in global public health
• Minimum of two years’ experience in teaching and/or undertaking research in public health or a related field in a low-income or middle-income country
• Native English speaker or level 5 proficiency in written and spoken English (on the Interagency Language Roundtable scale).
• Ability to work collaboratively in a highly interdisciplinary environment.
