Chief Academic Officer

The successful candidate will possess a collegial and open management style, effective interpersonal communication skills and a knowledge of the special challenges of today’s community college students.  In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the community college mission, the role of developmental education, diversity of thought, academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic diversity of community college students.  This position reports directly to the President and serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Areas of oversight include overall leadership and direction in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the instructional units of the College including academic divisions, off-campus programs/classes, professional development, distance learning, and accreditation and assessment.
  • This position is essential to the accomplishment of the educational mission of the College, by working to determine that the institution is offering the programs and courses the community needs, demonstrating an understanding and appreciation of the community college mission, diversity of thought, and academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic diversity of community college students.
  • Provides administrative oversight in the areas of instructional programs; academic planning, curricula, and scheduling; instructional technology, distance learning, accreditation, and assessment. The incumbent monitors faculty credit hour production (CHP) by reviewing, revising, and approving faculty course loads and office-hour schedules.            Provides strategic vision and leadership for curriculum and new program development, academic policy development, assessment, staffing/scheduling for the academic programs of the College and assures timely and effective instructional program review. Responsible for coordinating annual review and revision of the College catalog and schedule with various functional units. Be accountable for institutional effectiveness related to academic instruction. Facilitates strategic partnerships with K-12 districts, other college and universities, employers and other stakeholders.
  • As the Chief Academic Officer for the institution, this position plans for all areas of instruction and evaluates and improves college instructional programs.
  • Supervises and evaluates Deans for the Divisions of Allied Health and Nursing, Arts and Sciences, and Professional and Technical Programs, and other identified staff, and makes effective recommendations regarding hiring, discipline, and termination of unit employees.
  • Provides leadership for the institutional accreditation process.

Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Master’s Degree in related field.  Doctorate preferred.  
  • 5 or more years of progressively responsible, full-time professional experience in higher education is required.  Preference will be given to applicants who have community college administrative experience.  
  • Full-time equivalent college-level teaching experience is required.
  • Must hold the academic rank of Professor.
  • Must have considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of higher education administration, as well as a thorough knowledge and understanding of the mission and philosophy of the comprehensive community college.
  • Must demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and understanding of community colleges systems nationally, regionally, and in West Virginia.
  • Must ensure the College meets and exceeds the standards set forth by the Higher Learning Commission, West Virginia Community and Technical College System, internal governance, program accreditation agencies, and other regulatory bodies. 
  • Must be highly organized with the ability to carry out assignments requiring the organization of material, analysis of data, and preparation of pertinent reports, presentations and recommendations. 
  • Must demonstrate the ability to establish and meet deadlines and must have leadership ability and considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of effective supervision.
  • Must have the ability to express ideas effectively both orally and in writing and must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrative personnel, faculty, staff, students, and the general public.
  • Must have the ability to work independently and simultaneously on projects of varied complexity, carrying each to its conclusion with a very high level of effectiveness.
