The College of Music at Florida State University invites applications for the position of Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, a faculty member at the tenured or tenure-earning rank of Associate or Full Professor. Candidates with demonstrated success in teaching at the college level, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and previous administrative experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

The College of Music's history dates back to 1900, when instruction was delivered by one teacher of both vocal and instrumental music. Today, it has grown to occupy five buildings on the Northeast corner of campus and is one of the largest and most prestigious music programs in higher education. The College of Music is home to outstanding faculty and staff, among them two Grammy award winners, a Pulitzer prize-winning composer, two Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship recipients, several Fulbright Scholar recipients, and the world's preeminent scholar in medical music therapy. In addition, it operates five performance halls, including the Ruby Diamond Concert Hall, which hosts over 500 performances annually.

Responsibilities

 

The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs will:

  • coordinate and administer all undergraduate and graduate programs for 1150 students in the College of Music
  • serve as Director of Graduate Studies in Music and principal liaison to the Graduate School
  • oversee selection, budget, contracts, orientation, and evaluation of approximately 225 graduate assistants annually
  • work with faculty in the development and implementation of curricular offerings
  • supervise five full-time staff and graduate assistants responsible for recruitment, auditions, admissions, orientation, advising, registration, and graduation
  • monitor student academic progress and handle appeals
  • oversee internal and external reviews of academic programs in music
  • work collaboratively with other deans, professional staff, and faculty to advance the strategic vision of the College of Music and University at large
  • maintain a teaching course load as determined by the Dean of the College.

Qualifications

 

The successful candidate will:

  • hold a doctoral degree in music or a relevant discipline
  • demonstrate a record of continued success in teaching at the collegiate level
  • have developed strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • work independently and collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students
  • make decisions and manage workflow related to curriculum, student progress, and graduate studies in music
  • demonstrate a proven commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusion

A record of high-quality performance as an educator and evidence of scholarly research and/or creative activity appropriate for a senior appointment in music is required.

Preferred

 

Preference will be given to candidates with previous administrative experience in higher education.
