Academic Advising is seeking a peer advising coordinator who will be responsible for the development, promotion, and assessment of a peer advising program to increase retention and graduation of participating students. The peer advising coordinator is responsible for staying current on policies and procedures related to academic advising and on best peer advising practices. The peer advising coordinator will work collaboratively with units on campus providing academic resources to students and making appropriate referrals.

Primary Responsibilities
Oversee peer advising program activities to increase retention and graduation of program participants:

  • Identify campus resources and activities for teaching college transitional skills to program participants
  • Utilize an early alert system for student success plans and to identify students who need targeted support
  • Publicly promote the peer advising program to students and families at recruitment events
Select, manage and train peer advisors:
  • Recruit and hire peer advisors
  • Train peer advisors in the usage of mentoring techniques and technology to deliver program components
  • Conduct peer advisor team meetings to monitor activity and share updates
Provide intrusive academic advising to students as assigned. Utilize the advising as teaching model to help build student resiliency in the first year. Teach students to:
  • Interpret and learn academic policies and procedures
  • Identify academic objectives
  • Identify major and career options
On-board new students by coordinating their enrollment at:
  • Freshmen orientation
  • Transfer orientation
  • International student orientation
  • Recruitment Events


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Knowledge of academic advising, counseling, or closely related area through work experience or an educational setting
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Experience working as part of a team in a collaborative work environment
  • Evidence with ability to exercise sound judgment
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of customer service
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work flexible hours including some evening and weekend hours consistent with student needs
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Demonstrated commitment to a diverse work environment, including working with multicultural populations and an understanding of, and sensitivity to, issues affecting women and minorities
