Summary

Metadata Librarian focuses on the creation, maintenance, and enrichment of metadata representing STUs digital, physical, and virtual collections. In cooperation with other library staff, the Metadata Librarian provides expertise in the development, implementation and assessment of metadata policies and procedures to STU while monitoring external developments, standards development and changing needs in these areas. This position focuses on metadata maintenance activities, primarily the integration of metadata between systems and extending relationships between resources. The Metadata Librarian will holistically consider metadata across STUs collections, including MARC and non-MARC metadata.

Essential Functions

Metadata Management and Coordination

Serves as a metadata consultant, including but not limited to advising on metadata standards and assisting in development and implementation of best practices, tools, procedures, and workflows.

Works with colleagues at STU to strategically assess metadata quality; plans and coordinates metadata enhancement and remediation to address better discovery for library users. Maintains an ongoing working relationship with Public Services in these areas to better inform end-user satisfaction with discovery tools.

Creates and maintains local documentation on metadata standards and application guidelines; develops and provides training to library staff regarding resource description, metadata remediation, and metadata management.

Metadata Outreach and Consultation

Maintains strong working relationships and communicates regularly with staff across STU, fostering collaborative efforts between Collection Management Services and the greater STU community as well as the strategic alliances with professional and industry groups.

Professional Activities

Monitors and contributes to the development of local, national, and international metadata standards and policies.

Represent regional, and national meetings as requested.

Serve on University and/or Law School Committees and participate in University Law School events as requested.

Keeps informed of new trends in access services and the law profession.

Recommends materials and services to Library Administration based upon current trends in use amongst faculty and students.

Strong and effective communication skills, both oral and written.

Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively with students and faculty from a wide diversity of background and educational experiences.

Organizational and planning skills including the ability to work effectively on broad as well as detailed projects.

Ability to work in a network environment including working with an integrated library system.

Knowledge and ability to work with legal databases and common law school and educational technologies, and the ability to design library instructional tools.

Strong technical skills, interest in technology, and the ability to troubleshoot simple technology problems, failures, or deficiencies.

Ability to understand library system technology that can be used to improve services, instruction efforts and workflows.

Strong service orientation and effective problem-solving skills.

Be flexible with work assignments and work hours.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position may support supervision of departmental work-study students and public services work-study students as needed.

Work Environment Ph sical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; push library carts full of books; climb on stands to shelf books. The employee must occasionally lift or move library materials and supplies, up to 30 pounds.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This position occasionally requires schedule changes with weekend/evening hours.

Travel

Travel is primarily for Professional Development. The employee will be asked to represent the Law Library in local, regional, and national meetings as requested by the Library Director.

Reauired Education and Experience

M.L.S. from an A.L.A. accredited library school program is required.

Previous technical services and/or library metadata experience required.

Previous academic law library experience is required. Preferred Education and Experience

J.D. from an accredited ABA institution is preferred.

Two or more years of experience in libraries is preferred.

Tuition Benefit

After 1 year of continuous full‐time service, employees are eligible to enroll in STU’s bachelor and master courses, tuition‐free. The program will cover a maximum timeframe of 125% of credit hours attempted toward the degree program. Employees may enroll in STU’s doctoral program, with a 40% tuition discount, under the same conditions.
