The School of Music at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a tenure-track position in Music Technology to join the faculty at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor starting August 16, 2023.

The University of Illinois School of Music has been a leading academic center for music technology since the start of the digital revolution in the 1950s. Our Composition/Theory/Technology faculty have made significant contributions — both artistic and technical — in the areas of electro-acoustic composition techniques, digital sound synthesis and analysis, interactive performance systems, algorithmic music systems, spatialization, and digital audio production. With this position, the School seeks to continue in this proud tradition by helping a diverse array of students become the creators of the next generation of practical advances in the field and prepare them for a variety of careers in the commercial music industry.

Responsibilities:

Serve as a leader in the School's music technology program and assist in the design of new curricula aimed at preparing students for a variety of well-defined career opportunities. Teach core and elective courses within our bachelor's degree programs in Computer Science + Music and Music Technology, including those courses involving software design and coding; additional course offerings that fit within the School's composition/music theory/music technology area will also be expected. Seek collaboration with units and programs across campus—such as the Grainger College of Engineering, Game Studies, and the Siebel Center for Design—as well as areas within the School of Music and the College of Fine and Applied Arts. Advising undergraduate and graduate student projects. Recruit students for the music technology programs. Service to the School, University and to the field.

Position Qualifications:

Required:

• Master's degree in a field appropriate to meet qualifications and responsibilities.
• Evidence of creative invention, application, or integration of emerging technologies in sonic and musical production.
• Record of or demonstrated potential for leadership through research and creation in academic or industry settings; areas of expertise may include, but are not limited to, AI-assisted music composition, sound design, machine listening, music information retrieval and other forms of computational analysis, and augmented/virtual reality applications in sound.
• Ability to advise and recruit undergraduate and graduate students.
• History of excellence achieved through engaging diverse audiences, collaborators, knowledge's, and traditions with respect to race, gender, and class.

Preferred:

• Established record of experience in collaborating with practitioners and/or researchers from both within and without music research and industry.
• Experience in curriculum design.
• Experience in academic leadership.
• Doctoral degree in appropriate field.
