Position Summary

OpenStax (part of Rice University) is a non-profit textbook publisher, learning software producer, and platform for learning research. Our mission is to provide every student and instructor with free access to high-quality teaching and learning resources that help them succeed in their educational journey. We have created a library of more than 50 free and openly licensed college textbooks that have served millions of students across the globe, resulting in over one billion dollars in savings. We have created additional software and course materials to help students read with more engagement and practice more effectively, incorporating our research team’s expertise in cognitive science and machine learning.

The Business Intelligence Analyst I reviews data to produce market intelligence reports. This individual is responsible for development of complex technical analysis and design, new programming, modifications, scheduling, tuning, testing and maintenance of systems in support of new and existing Business Intelligence and other projects.

The hiring range is $73,120 to $98,710. Remote work is acceptable. Rice Benefits . This position requires U.S. work authorization.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree
    • In lieu of the education requirement, additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted
  • 5 years of experience analyzing and reporting on data from different systems
    • In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted
Essential Functions
  • Provides complex analysis, conceptualize, design, implement and develop solutions for critical business intelligence (BI) components
  • Performs dataflow, system and data analysis and develops meaningful and useful presentation of data in BI applications
  • Plans and implements standards, defines/codes conformed global and reusable objects, performs complex database design, data modeling EDW and programming and streamline the systems
  • Consults with client groups to assess user needs and understand the business processes; converts user requirements into technical solutions
  • Contributes to data analysis, designs and developments of new and ongoing business intelligence (BI) projects involving complex EDW structures OR on OLTP systems
  • Collaborates closely with internal and external teams to understand and apply changes/modifications impacting data warehouse
  • Conducts and participates in code walkthroughs and document technical design
  • Assists in quality control testing
  • Meticulously follows software methodologies defined
  • Monitors ETL processes, system audits, dashboard reporting and presentation layer functioning and performance
  • Pro-actively resolves issues as found
  • Supports the performance of systems
  • Follows the release cycles and implements on-time delivery of bug fixes, change requests and enhancements
  • Troubleshoots and solves technical problems
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

  • Database design and structure
Required Qualifications
  • Strong programming skills, relational database skills with expertise in advanced SQL and PL/SQL
  • Skills in Shell Programming and any object oriented programming language
  • Mastery in business intelligence and data warehousing concepts and methodologies
  • Expert in data modeling and designing data warehouse from heterogeneous OLTP sources
  • Ability to design physical and reporting data models for seamless cross-functional and cross-systems data reporting
  • Able to design complex ETL’s extracting data through XML files, RDBMS and flat file sources
  • High expertise on databases, data acquisition, ETL strategies and tools and technologies
  • Mastery in reporting/analytics and data visualization tools
  • Ability to prioritize workload and work with minimal supervision
  • Experience with scripting language like Python, Shell, JavaScript, HTML5
  • Broad understanding of multiple existing and next generation business intelligence tools and technologies
  • Ability to mentor lower level developers on definitive tasks

  • Experience with postgres databases
  • Experience with Salesforce and/or Pardot
