Vocal Arts –Studio Teacher – Baritone or bass-baritone preferred

The University of Southern California Thornton School of Music invites applicants for a full-time faculty position in Vocal Arts & Opera, a department within the Division of Classical Performance and Composition.  Baritone/Bass- Baritone preferred.  The appointment is anticipated at the rank of Assistant Professor of Practice.  This is a full-time, non-tenure track (RTPC), benefits-eligible appointment for an initial period of three years.  Renewal beyond the initial three-year period of appointment is possible, at the discretion of the Thornton Dean.  The appointment begins on August 16, 2023.

Combining the benefits of a world-class conservatory and a leading research university, the USC Thornton School of Music offers students the opportunity to pursue a thorough music education in a real-world context.  A new educational model for undergraduates in the Division of Classical Performance and Composition, launched in fall 2019, renews Thornton’s commitment to a virtuosic education and asks students to reimagine what it means to be a classical musician in the 21st century.  Thornton offers students a full range of musical disciplines across a demanding innovative curriculum, and the opportunity to work with a faculty of national and international renown.  For more information, please visit us at music.usc.edu/

With a student cohort that is largely BIPOC, gender expansive, and with a wide range of ages and experience, the applicant must be adept at teaching, communicating and empathizing with an extraordinarily diverse student population.  The University’s commitment to building an academic environment hospitable to this wide range of diversity is full and complete.  To that end, we encourage applications from candidates who identify with groups that are historically underrepresented in the academy.

Duties

The instructor engaged for this position will teach 18 hours of voice studio instruction, at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and is expected to hold regular studio classes, attend faculty meetings, auditions, juries, and studio degree recitals.  Classroom instruction in repertoire or other topics related to the candidate’s expertise may be substituted for individual studio instruction.  The candidate is expected to participate in Thornton School committees and assume an active role in the recruitment of both graduate and undergraduate students to the Thornton School of Music.  The instructor will be required to maintain a regular campus presence throughout the academic year as specified in the USC Faculty Handbook’s absence policy.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a record of success in teaching individual studio instruction at the collegiate or pre-professional level, and demonstrated excellence as a distinguished performer of operatic and concert repertoire.  Baritone or Bass-Baritone preferred.

  • Minimum Education:  Bachelor of Music Degree

  • Preferred Education:  Master’s Degree in Vocal Performance.

  • Minimum Experience:  A record of successful teaching of advanced students, either in a private studio setting or within a university or conservatory.  Consideration may be given for extensive professional performance experience, in operatic and/or concert settings, in lieu of other qualifications, if appropriate.

To Apply:

Please submit a cover letter, CV, name and contact info for 3 references and teaching philosophy statement by November 1, 2022.   We will contact candidates separately for additional materials if necessary.
