The Graduate School is a division of the OIST Graduate University. The mission of the Graduate School is to provide first-class postgraduate education to the highest international standard by offering academic and student support services. The Dean’s Office in the Graduate School Division where this position will reside provides overall coordination of the division work. The position will coordinate with the deans and other sections to case-manage the students of concern.

Responsibilities 

  1. Coordinate the OIST Graduate School Students of Concern Committee
  2. Meet individually with students to assess needs, assist with problem identification, care plan creation, resource referral and appropriate follow-up as well as case tracking.
  3. Assist in assessing the needs of students to identify programs and services and offer solutions to issues that may be barriers to student success, specifically related to student health and well-being.
  4. Create relationships across campus, including OIST Health Center, Ganjuu Wellbeing Service, Faculty, Graduate School sections that support ongoing support for academic success and wellbeing of students.
  5. Serve on, or lead, workgroups and committees that support student needs.
  6. Participate in regular meetings between Graduate School leaders and Student Council
  7. Provide outreach information to students, faculty, and staff on identifying students in distress and making appropriate referrals to campus resources.
  8. Work with other OIST campus services such as Bosai Center and Health Center to triage care for students in emergency situations.
  9. Research best practices for care services for graduate student wellbeing
  10. Review and analyze current Graduate School student support policies and processes, making recommendations that support best practices.
  11. Track and assess the effectiveness of Students of Concern Committee work and Students of Concern case management.
  12. Engage in Graduate School division-wide communication and activities.
  13. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications 

(Required)

  1. Working proficiency in both spoken English and spoken Japanese
  2. Competence in written English
  3. Bachelor’s degree in psychology, education, communications, nursing, or other relevant fields
  4. Strong empathetic communication skills and ability to talk with people of different levels of authority
  5. Genuine interest in supporting students in distress
  6. Experience with working with diverse student populations
  7. Ability to engage and successfully connect with all levels of university administration, faculty, staff, students and the public
  8. Ability to work in a team environment and independently
  9. High levels of initiative and creativity
  10. Ability to understand multiple perspectives, reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations
  11. Ability to draw and maintain appropriate professional boundaries
  12. Experience in working with various forms of technology for communication, graphic design, data visualization, etc.

(Preferred) 

  1. Master’s degree in psychology, counseling, social work, nursing, or other related fields
  2. License or certification (regardless of jurisdiction) for professional counseling
  3. Experience with working with graduate students
  4. Experience with working in an international environment
     

Report to
Dean of the Graduate School Starting Date
As early as possible Term & Working Hours 

Term: Full-time, fixed term appointment for 1-2 years. Contract initially with 3-month probationary period (inclusive). This contract may be renewed.
Working hours: Flextime (core time 10:00-15:00) 7.5 hrs per day (Multiplied by prescribed working days per month)
