Description

The Interactive Media program at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) invites applications for Adjunct Faculty positions. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and will be kept on file and reviewed according to emerging needs. The successful candidate must be able to obtain a letter of no objection from their home institution.

The Interactive Media program is a Bachelor of Arts major at NYUAD that combines art, interaction design, communications, computer science, and engineering. The program is housed in the University’s Arts and Humanities Division and has a broad reach across the University. The mission of the program is to foster the creative use of emerging technologies for communication and expression as well as to leverage the creative process as a means to engage in both theoretical and critical discourse.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:
  • UAE citizen or UAE residence visa holder.
  • Eligible for an NOC letter from current employer/sponsor (if applicable) permitting the candidate to teach at NYUAD.
We are looking for candidates who:
  • Are fluent in one or more of the following: creative coding, physical computing, VR/AR/XR, 3D modeling/animation, game design/development, web development, interaction design, user experience design, storytelling (through sound, video, animation, and other media), bioart practices, media studies
  • Engage in a creative practice that has a critical component, actively exploring new tools and modes of expression, and are able to inspire students to do the same
  • Possess an understanding of the aesthetic, cultural, social, political, and ethical implications of working with new communication technologies and emerging media
  • Have experience teaching, preferably at the undergraduate or graduate level
Good interpersonal skills to collaborate with colleagues and actively interact with students in a multicultural education setting are highly desirable. Connection or experience with the region is a plus.

We are seeking imaginative, skillful, and generous colleagues to help students learn how to use emerging media and communication technologies to enrich, enhance and improve people's lives. We especially value candidates whose practice engages with the theoretical, historical, and social aspects of technology, and who are able to lead critical discussions concerning these topics with our students and community. We are actively seeking applicants that have a commitment to equity-forward teaching practices and who recognize and embrace the values of inclusivity and diversity, both in the classroom and in the field.

Having a wide variety of individuals from different backgrounds and with different abilities working together to make creative use of new technology is not only important but paramount to our mission. Adjunct faculty may teach between 1 and 4 classes during the academic year (during Fall and Spring semesters). Engaging with students beyond class time in the program's lab space through project assistance, personal direction, and community activities is key. Faculty members are expected to facilitate activities, events, conversations, labs, and visitors that enrich the community. They are also expected to actively participate in the larger sphere of departmental and university service.
