Description of the GWS Program:
Appalachian’s GWS program is an interdisciplinary program housed in the IDS Department. It is the oldest GWS program in the University of North Carolina system and the second-oldest in North Carolina. In addition to the Director, the program has 4 standing faculty (one of whom is full time in GWS ) and many faculty affiliates from departments and colleges across campus. It offers innovative courses and 4 undergraduate degree programs (a BA in GWS and minors in GWS, LGBT Studies, and Girls Studies) and a graduate certificate. Description of the IDS Department:
The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies is one of 17 departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. IDS has16 faculty members, 120 undergraduate majors, and 20 graduate students. We offer BAs in Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies and Global Studies; a BA and BS in Interdisciplinary Studies; an MA in Appalachian Studies; and 13 interdisciplinary minors. IDS also houses the premier first year experience at App State, the Watauga Residential College, a living-learning community. Further details can be found at the IDS Department website . Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Schedule GWS courses
  • Recruit qualified faculty to teach courses
  • Student advising, outreach, and retention
  • Schedule and facilitate GWS faculty meetings
  • Coordinate GWS committees
  • Mentor faculty
  • Coordinate GWS assessment
  • Manage operating budget and foundation accounts under the charge of the IDS Department Chair
  • Manage program communication (email, website, social media, etc.)
  • Lead strategic planning discussions
  • Attend IDS department meetings and participate on IDS department committees
  • Provide regular input to the IDS Department Chair
  • Hire and supervise a 20-hour GA
  • Advocate for the GWS program
  • Coordinate campus-wide GWS co-curricular programming
