General Statement of Duties:   

The Education Department invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, assistant professor position.  Appointment at the rank of assistant professor is anticipated, but higher rank may be considered for suitably qualified candidates. Requires the ability to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in reading and related literacy skills implemented in classrooms and in remedial and clinical settings.  The candidate should have expertise in the identification, assessment, and treatment of reading and language difficulties, including dyslexia.  Further the candidate should be competent to address scientifically-based and clinically-proven practices in reading for all students, including those with reading or language disabilities. Requires a doctorate in Reading or Language Disabilities along with knowledge in pedagogy and curriculum adaptations for students with reading or language disabilities and Special Education expertise and/or experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses both on campus and online (24 semester hours of credit of instruction per school year) and preparation for classroom instruction.
  2. Instructional responsibilities include courses in scientifically-based and clinically-proven practices in reading instruction for all students, including the assessment of reading, language development, and the treatment of reading and language difficulties. 
  3. Supervising field and clinical experiences on or off campus. Undergraduate and graduate student assistance including academic advising. Participate in curriculum review and development, program reviews and student outcomes assessment. Includes activities related to accreditation by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and other governing agencies.   Attend university functions, including commencement; convocation; and faculty, committee, and departmental meetings. Participate in scheduled orientation and registration programs. Utilization of technology in teaching, including university student monitoring and data systems. Providing service to the department, university, and the profession. Coordinate with off-campus and extended campus partners. Opportunities to teach summer, winter term, and online undergraduate and graduate courses.

Qualifications:

  1. The successful candidate must hold a doctorate in Reading/Language Disabilities along with knowledge and experience in the specialization of reading pedagogy, language development and disabilities, and informal and formal assessment of students with and without disabilities.
  2. Additional expertise in digital literacy and experience in public school teaching.  Expertise in the area of all aspects of teaching students who have language and reading disabilities, including differentiating and research-based instruction. 
  3. Established record of scholarly work and active participation in professional organizations. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse student body. Experience developing curriculum and course material inclusive of underrepresented groups is preferred. Evidence of serving, and/or research related to diverse, multi-cultural populations is also preferred. Ability to teach courses related to application of assessment results to classroom settings is preferred. Ability to integrate appropriate technology and software in teaching.
