Brief Summary of Work for this Position

As a member of the departmental leadership team, the Director of Student Involvement and Leadership ( SIL ) oversees all aspects of the SIL unit’s programs and services, including:

• SGA Advising (Executive Board).
• Campus-wide Programs.
• Leadership Development Programs.
• Student Success and Retention Efforts.
• Program Assessment.

The Student Involvement and Leadership unit is responsible for comprehensive and innovative program development, which promotes belonging, engagement and involvement and contributes directly to student success and retention efforts. The Director provides direct advising support for the Student Government Association, general oversight for WaveLink (student engagement portal), and overall direction of student involvement and engagement opportunities through multiple programming units. The Director must maintain strong relationships with Fraternity and Sorority Life, Student Community Engagement, Campus Recreation, Transition Programs, Housing and Residence Life, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and Student Engagement, Enrollment and Retention staff, and other university support services. This position directly supervises one Associate Director and two Assistant Directors and provides leadership for a unit of 7 professional staff members. The Director plays a vital role in developing and interpreting policies, problem-solving, and strategic planning. The Director reports to the Executive Director of Campus Life.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

• Master’s Degree in Student Personnel, Student Development, Educational Administration, or a closely related field.

• A minimum of 5-8 years of professional experience and demonstrated capability in working with and advising student organizations; experience creating inclusive and equitable environments for student programming efforts; commitment to the value of student involvement as an experiential learning process; and demonstrated experience in personnel management and fiscal management is necessary. Knowledge and understanding of how to interpret and apply risk management and policy in procedures in campus-wide programming and student advising settings are primary.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

• Experience supervising professional staff members.
• Experience advising student programming board and/or student government association or equivalent student governing bodies.
• Prior experience facilitating training for undergraduate student organizations or employees.
• Proven application of student retention and student success strategies.
• Experience managing student engagement and involvement platforms.

The Division of Student Affairs consists of thirteen functional departments, each of which is responsible for providing a variety of student support, service, and educational programs which are accessible to all members of the university community. The staff members are dedicated individuals known for their passion and commitment to implementing programs and services that affect student development over the course of a lifetime. Student Affairs provides excellent delivery of student services that are responsive to student needs and promotes the quality of life and education both inside and outside the classroom. We build institutional traditions and lifelong affiliations through creative programs, vibrant student organizations, and a living/learning environment built on core values and uncompromising principles. The Division is a leader and primary spokesperson for students.

The Campus Life department supports and gives direction to out-of-classroom learning. Based on the philosophy that learning is not confined to the classroom but is constant and on-going, the mission of the department is to facilitate the educational process by providing a laboratory experience for student growth and an arena for the development of cultural, social, leadership, and recreational awareness. This is accomplished through the administration of the Fisher Student Center, University Union, Burney Center, and Warwick Center and their programs and services by providing guidance and resources to student leaders and organizations and serving as the campus’ central point of reference regarding leadership development, student activities and organizations, fraternity and sorority life, and student community engagement.

Campus Life also serves as the first point of contact for conference and event planning and assumes the space scheduling coordination function for all campus space (except for academic course scheduling), and works with campus space stewards in various departments throughout campus to ensure timely, coordinated service for all customers.
