Job Description

The Public Relations Department in Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position in Public Relations to begin Fall of 2023.

About the Public Relations Department at Newhouse
The Public Relations program at Newhouse is one of the oldest in the country and one of the few to offer PR education on all levels. Programs include:
· undergraduate (BS, Public Relations);
· master’s (MS, Public Relations);
· Ph.D. (PR emphasis);
· executive education to mid-career executives through an online, interdisciplinary MS in Communications Management;
· a public relations specialization in the online Communications master’s program;
· a joint master’s program in public diplomacy and global communications with the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs that emphasizes the interaction of communications and international relations.
Current faculty in the department have professional experience in corporate, agency, government, not-for-profit and academic sectors and research interests include crisis communication, ethics, gender and diversity, reputation and relationship management, digital communication and public diplomacy. They hold positions of leadership in professional and academic organizations and are award-winning teachers and researchers.
The Public Relations Department is consistently ranked as a top program by PRWeek and holds a PRSA Certification in Education for Public Relations for its undergraduate and master’s programs. About the Newhouse School of Public Communication
Widely regarded as the nation’s leading communications school, Newhouse is home to approximately 2,000 undergraduate and 180 graduate students. It is housed in a 250,000-square-foot, three-building complex that includes state-of-the-art classrooms, a 300-seat auditorium, a research center, an executive education wing, a café, and many spaces for formal and informal meetings and collaboration among students, faculty, and staff. Qualifications

The candidate must possess at least a Master’s degree in communications or related discipline. A Ph.D. degree in mass communication, computational science, or a related field is strongly preferred ( ABD considered). The successful candidates should have or show clear evidence of an active/potential research agenda and demonstrate leadership through professional and/or academic work.

Job Specific Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in using data and visual analytics to solve public relations problems in today’s communication environment. Of particular interest are candidates with teaching experience or a consistent and visible track record of research/publications in areas related to:
● Strategic public relations management based on data analytics,
● Communicating insights and telling stories based on data and visual analytics, and
● Application of artificial intelligence or big data analytics to evolving public relations practice in the applicant’s specialty areas, including, but not limited to, entertainment/sports public relations, risk/health communication, crisis management, or international public relations.

Responsibilities

The ideal candidate should be able to teach several courses across our curriculum, including classes in digital media and analytics, public relations and social media writing, principles of public relations, and public relations research, along with other opportunities such as ethics, public relations management, diversity in PR, or courses that complement the individual’s expertise.
The candidate should be able to integrate profession-based learning experiences into courses via field experiences or projects, teach both undergraduate and graduate courses, and engage in scholarly research by maintaining an active research agenda.
The chosen candidate is expected to facilitate collaborative research within the department, across the Newhouse School, and within the larger academic community.
