Job Description

The Public Relations Department at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications is seeking to fill a full-time Professor-of-Practice (PoP) with a PR professional who has impressive industry experience, beginning in Fall 2023. A PoP’s main responsibilities include teaching, maintaining connections to the industry to keep the department and School current on professional practices and innovation, and service to the department, School, University, and community.

About the Newhouse School of Public Communication
Widely regarded as the nation’s leading communications school, Newhouse is home to approximately 2,000 undergraduate and 180 graduate students. It is housed in a 250,000-square-foot, three-building complex that includes state-of-the-art classrooms, a 300-seat auditorium, a research center, an executive education wing, a café, and many spaces for formal and informal meetings and collaboration among students, faculty, and staff. The Dick Clark Studios and the Allen Gerry Center for Media Innovation include a high-tech entertainment production space, and provide the school with a cutting-edge media facility that gives students a strong preparation for careers in the profession.

Our students come from around the world and secure a place in the class through a highly competitive admissions process. This year’s incoming freshmen earned an average 3.9 GPA .

About the Public Relations Department at Newhouse

The Public Relations program at Newhouse is one of the oldest in the country and one of the few to offer PR education on all levels. Programs include:
· undergraduate (BS, Public Relations);
· master’s (MS, Public Relations);
· Ph.D. (PR emphasis);
· executive education to mid-career executives through an online, interdisciplinary MS in Communications Management;
· a public relations specialization in the online Communications master’s program;
· a joint master’s program in public diplomacy and global communications with the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs that emphasizes the interaction of communications and international relations.
Current faculty in the department have professional experience in corporate, agency, government, not-for-profit and academic sectors and research interests include crisis communication, ethics, gender and diversity, reputation and relationship management, digital communication and public diplomacy. They hold positions of leadership in professional and academic organizations and are award-winning teachers and researchers.
The Public Relations Department is consistently ranked as a top program by PRWeek and holds a PRSA Certification in Education for Public Relations for its undergraduate and master’s programs. Qualifications

The successful candidate must have a Master’s degree ( APR designation and at least five years’ experience in public relations preferred). Public Relations professionals with a strong passion for teaching and significant experience in Public Relations are encouraged to apply.

Job Specific Qualifications

The person we are seeking would have extensive professional experience and leadership in Public Relations, primarily from agency and corporate sectors. A Professor-of-Practice focuses on maintaining successful connections and building new ones with Public Relations professionals and organizations. We are looking for experience in researching, writing, and developing industry reports such as the state of social media or the state of digital communications. Proficiency with social media, digital communications and analytics is preferred, as is international PR experience.
Previous teaching, e.g. training, course instruction and professional seminars, is preferred. The ability to teach public relations from a diverse domestic and international perspective is expected. The department values teachers who integrate digital media and technology into their teaching, and seeks those with experience in managing and manipulating data.

Responsibilities
  • Professors-of-Practice teach six courses per academic year.
  • These courses may be at the undergraduate or graduate level in our traditional residential programs. Depending upon qualifications, this professor may also have the opportunity to teach in the School’s online master’s degree program in Communications Management and in the public relations specialization of the online master’s degree in Communications.
  • The position entails a variety of service duties, including academic and career advising of undergraduate and graduate students, advising and supporting the Ehling Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America and its student-run agency Hill Communications; department, school and university committee service; curriculum development; and community/industry outreach.
  • Teaching responsibilities may include Public Relations writing courses with an emphasis in digital communication, Principles of Public Relations, along with other opportunities such as Ethics, Public Relations Management, Diversity in PR, or courses that complement the individual’s expertise.
