Assistant Professor of Historic Preservation and Regionalism

The UNM Department of Landscape Architecture seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor of Historic Preservation and Regionalism (HPR). The Historic Preservation and Regionalism Program, housed in the Landscape Architecture Department, offers a graduate certificate in this department and a Master of Science graduate degree through the Architecture Department.

We invite applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE) faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor probationary appointment, leading to a tenure decision. The successful candidate will teach required and elective courses during the academic year. We seek applicants that have an emerging record of excellence in teaching and grant funded outreach and research. Applications received on or before January 7, 2023, will have best consideration. The position will remain open until filled. The appointment commences August 2023.

The School of Architecture + Planning is comprised of departments of Architecture, Community + Regional Planning, and Landscape Architecture. The School has been involved in public interest design for over fifty years, with research centers leading these efforts. The Design and Planning Assistance Center (DPAC) works with urban and rural communities to address complex challenges. The Indigenous Design and Planning Institute (iD+Pi) works with native communities to serve their design needs and is the only institute of its kind in the USA. The Historic Preservation + Regionalism program collaborates with each department and the School’s research centers.

The School of Architecture and Planning’s departments are housed in the award-winning George Pearl Hall, designed by architect Antoine Predock. In addition to the spacious, naturally lit design studio spaces, the School has two computer labs for group teaching, and a Fabrication Lab with state-of-the-art technology. Additionally, the US Department of Education’s College Scorecard illustrates that UNM is one of the most affordable universities to study at the graduate or undergraduate level. Recent alumni are working in leading firms practicing across New Mexico and the USA.

Albuquerque, the largest city in New Mexico, is located along the Rio Grande, adjacent to the Sandia Mountains. A high desert city, the climate is mild most of the year. Minimum Qualifications:

1. A master’s degree in Historic Preservation, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, or Planning from an accredited department or international equivalent.
2. Three years of Historic Preservation teaching experience as the instructor of record.  
3. A record of funded research and community partnership and engagement.

Preferred Qualifications: 

1. Demonstration of excellence in Historic Preservation teaching and research related to the following:
   1. U.S. Southwest / Borderlands Areas
   2. Vernacular Building Methods
   3. Cultural Landscapes
2. Evidence of innovation in research and/or design through demonstrated projects, workshops, conferences, etc.
3. A connection to the international historic preservation community, and demonstrated interdisciplinary collaboration and leadership.
4. A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
